I was planning to take a few photos of this well known man, and I decided on the SWC. I shot off three rolls (for practice) the past days, and all went well. Today, I had 3 minutes to take a couple of snapshots of the man, and for some reason, the film tore off. There was no time to do anything about it as I discovered that the film was torn after I had "completed" all 12 frames later on. Then only did I see the torn film, from the start of the roll. The counter on the SWC did not show any errors. It was counting 1-12.

This is OK. I have some photos of him from our last interview.

Raid, did both the film and the backing tear off? Where was the tear? Was it right at the leader end? I'm guessing maybe the paper tore before the film started.

Yes, Rob, it is as you have said. I am glad that I got some photos of NC in my last meeting with him.

I usually don't slip the film under the side bar for flattening the film. I did this today. Maybe this caused the problem.

Yes the film and paper goes under the clip. It gets held down by the clip while replacing the insert into the back. Then when you straighten out the key, the clip releases the film so it can be advanced. And it should release. If it didn't, it may be time for an overhaul.

Don't feel bad. When Alfred Eisenstadt photographed Marilyn Monroe, he was so excited he forgot to load his Leica. He had to go back and do it over.

Thank you Rob :)
I had only a few minutes, and the light was bad.
On the other hand, our discussions went very well.
If I am lucky, he may one day give a talk in Pensacola.
Then I can take more photos of him.

Hi Raid,

I hope this doesn't sour you on the SWC, I've been really enjoying your shots from it.

On the bright side, you can check that off the "stupid things I did that made me not get any shots" list, along with "left the lens cap on" and "why does my Leica say 40 exposures?".

Cheers,
Michael

Ouch! My sympathy for that one Raid. I've had a few problems with videotapes and film over the years, but it seems to be that Murphy's Law applies that there's more likely be a problem with a less repeatable event. When I was shooting weddings on film, I rotated four different camera bodies (2 x 35, 2 x 120) on the day to try to prevent Murphy from biting.

Pity Raid, but that's life. Any camera can fail. I find a Rolleiflex a bit more foolproof than Hasselblad in terms of film loading and advance.
As to Mr Chomsky - an interesting individual for sure.
I am sort of sensing, that his leftist views are genetically determined. It is the same in case of physicists who claim to believe in god, only that they tend to lean to the right. There is a good hint about this question in this speech about the politics of disgust:

Last time I saw an interview with Mr. Chomsky, he said that the only bright spots politically on our planet were in Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela. Well ... have you been spotting the recent events there? It is unlikely Mr. Chomsky is not intelligent, but his intelligence seems to be highly specialised.

Isn't this academia? The more you know, the less you know about, and eventually you know everything about nothing!
But we digress.

(I am a physicist who doesn't lean right - make your on judgement about god. I know a lot about nothing)

Ohhh Raid! It's ok, things happen sometimes sand if something has to go wrong it will in the absolute special moment! But it's important you had an interesting talk with an interesting man, even if sometimes controversial.

Next time you'll get a better picture!

Hi Michael,
Oh no, I love the SWC. I am still learning from it all. No real harm has been done.
