I'm back from my vacation, most of which was in Italy. I would like to thank everyone who shared advice on Italy in my other thread I started before my trip.

Well, this is going to be a long one. Well, one with many parts to it, as I plan to add things to it as I go through the images and memories of the trip.
For now, in one word - AMAZING!
I'll give more details as I go along, but I have to say - I have travelled to many countries. Many are very beautiful. But Italy - simply AMAZING. No other place I have been to compares to it.
We were there for almost a month and saw and did a lot. And I can still say - we just barely touched to surface. We spent time in Rome, Venice, Florence, Pisa, Coastal towns around Amalfi and some suberbs of Rome like Tivoli, St. Angelo and others. Lots of walking every day. Lots of places to see. Very tired but it's so worth it!!!!!
And I have to say - food is amazing too. Best I have had! Even not so good food was great!. And Gelato - just to die for. And I usually dont care much for the ice-cream..... I have no idea how they do it - all I can say - it's Italia!
I will add photos later, but to make it more photographic I will tell you a couple of things - I took Hexar RF, RD1S, Welta 6x6 Folder and little Canon Elph digital with me. 3 lenses - 15mm CV, 35/1.2 and 50/2.
Along the way I got a present from my relatives - Rollei 35S, which I used too - seems to be in good working condition.

I also picked up a lens at a local Italian weekend flea market. Dont know if it is fake or real. Glass has some marks and coating loss. Focusing is Ok, but could use some lube. Yet it works Ok and even is pretty sharp, just somewhat low contrast:

Well, what else? Oh - my most used gear was RD1S with 15mm - about 70%. At times I used 35/1.2. Never 50/2. Didnt use Welta. Used Hexar RF for a few rolls of slides, but later switched to 35S. Occl pics with digi Elph.
My early thoughts - CV 15mm (mine is M-mount) is one Superb lens! On RD1S it was THE lens to have in Italy. Even 4.5 was not an issue in most cases. And usually - outside just set it to f8 or f11 and just shoot. Easy and great results - I have many keepers it seems to be.
Ok, enough for now. I'll add pics as I process things.

Just remembered one more thing - RF related. During the entire time - I came across 5 RF cameras. All Leicas. A couple of M8s. A couple of M6s. One IIIc or similar - a camera shop owner had one, where I got some batteries. Thats it. Most people I saw were using Digital Canons SLR. Fewer (much fewer) Digital Nikon SLRs. Even less - Sony SLRs. Some had Lumix or Olympus 3/4 type cameras and of course many Digital P&S cameras. A couple times I saw film P&Ss. Once I saw a Hassy with a digi Back. Once or twice some older film SLRs. Just FYI.

BTW, if someone can tell me more about the Zeiss lens I got (first post in this thread) - real or fake? Please do.

Hi Krosya, nice lens!

Normally, there would be several digits of the serial number stamped into the metal ring surrounding the rear element, which would be dark metal and not shiny chrome. It seems that on your lens the ring is ground back to bare metal, not sure why.

The serial number places it in 1942/1943 (too late here to get out the Zeiss book, off to bed in a minute).

Make sure you get a thread-on rear cap to protect that protruding element, they can be found easily on eBay. Until then, you can make do with the bottom end of a plastic film container, cut shorter. It won't grip but at least it'll give some protection.

Looking forward to seeing your shots from that great trip, Italy is on my future-destinations list!

It looks as if you had a wonderful time. I may travel to italy next year. How did you travel from city to ity, by car or by train?

I am planning to take the SWC plus M8 plus Minox GT on my Italy trip.
You have seen some awesome places, Krosya.
In my three trips to Italy so far, I stayed North of Rome.

Mostly we used trains - it's better to use italian web sites to buy tickets - much cheaper than ones in english. At times we used a car - we have family there so they drove us to some places. Public transportation is usually pretty good.

I like the images of the people. Nice.
15mm is too wide for me. I prefer 50mm and maybe 35mm as my main focal lengths in travel. The 25/4 would be OK in some cases.

I do enjoy your pictures here.

We must have been in Italy at the same time, as we got back last week.
My second trip there in 3 years. . . this time I even brought my wife along ! :D

What is not to love about Italia ? ?

Without wishing to rain on anyone's parade, the driving.Worst in the world. And yes, I've been to Greece, Malta, China, Mexico, India, Turkey, Romania -- and driven or ridden motorcycles in most of them.

Lots of nice pictures, and don't let me put anyone off going to Italy, but do let me put you off attempting to drive yourself when you're there. Use public transport.

First visit: rear-ended on motorcycle. Frances couldn't walk for 3 days (we were stopped at road works when someone rammed into the back of us). Second visit: Frances almost pushed over by a man who couldn't wait for her to get a receipt from the motorway toll. Third visit: had to brake VERY hard on the first roundabout to avoid squashing a motorcyclist who just didn't stop. I needn't have bothered: 5 miles later he (or someone who looked very like him) was spread well across the road. On one of the trips, we saw 5 fatal or near-fatal accidents in Italy, and none in France, Slovenia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Switzerland...

Cheers,

R.

Absolutely agree. We took public transportation in Rome and Venice (which does not allow cars anyway!) except for driving a small Audi around Tuscany. Big city driving and parking are utterly insane. 75% of the cars in Rome have mashed fenders and scraped sides.

But even worse . . . try driving in Montepulciano ! That is a WONDERFUL town (we were there 6 days and I'd go back tonight to spend my life there) but driving in town? . . . horrid. Rome? - a no-holds-barred chariot race !

Nonetheless, I hated leaving Italy.

Agree on Driving - I wouldnt and didnt drive there, but there is a lot of public transportation and really, most places you can and should walk.
I also have to say - having been to many countries as well, Italy is the one I didnt want to leave. Only one. Hope to go back again, soon. I'll be posting more pics as I process them.

I have been three times so far in Italy by car. I drove without ny problems

Me too I have driven there for at least a month every year for the past 20 years
you just have to anticipate: if you are approching a blind bend the car behind will choose that moment to overtake...
