George Stagg is superb, one of my absolute favorites, but at 140proof, you must respect it as well. "Blissful oblivion" is how a friend described it. A.H. Hirsch Reserve is another outstanding bourbon -- as good as any single-malt Scotch. Woodford Reserve is a very very good bourbon that's a little more affordable than the other two mentioned. I've never cared for Jack Daniels -- I think it's a little harsh compared to a first-rate bourbon, but I'm certainly willing to respect other peoples' tastes.

Regarding scotches, I had a glass or two of Glenrothes (spelling?) with my father the other night, and thought it was very good indeed.
 
The only Scotch I ever cared for I recieved as a gift, The Macallen. (sp?)

For shots, Jameson.

And while we're also talkin' Jack, I always liked Jack with Ginger. I'll have to try it with Coke.

Oh! bmattoc, I enjoyed your post. But if I read you, you probably don't give a ****e what I think....good for you! 😉

Jack Daniels a whiskey???? hmmmm not in my book! Whiskey being the irish spelling, now Bushmills thats an Irish whiskey!

On whiskys, an not Scotch, for i hate that phrase!: Scapa is my fav whisky its distilled in Orkney, followed closely by its neighbour Highland park, particularly the 18year old which is very smooth! Both enjoyed on there own no ice no water!

Islay malts, there a different kettle of fish! Bowmore and Laphroig are very peaty in taste and come to life with just a little watter in the glass! If you purchase a bottle of Laphroig you can go an there website and become a "friend" entitleing you to one square foot of peat bog! And should you ever choose to visit Islay they will provide you with wellington boots and an umbrella so you can go visit your patch of peat, with a dram waiting for you when you return!

Mmmm.... oh, yes indeed it is.

However, most of the time I'm with patrickjames. 🙁 When I can "splurge" it's Jameson.

I'm not much of a whisky drinker. I used to live next to an Irish pub which had a good selection. That was also the time I was learning Irish, so I spent a lot of time there, but Red Breast is about the only memorable whisky I've drunk there.

However, they were selling a good poitín, too, which I actually preferred. Now you can stone me. 🙂

Being Irish, I had my first taste of Guinness at about 12, didnt much like it but found my self on the floors of a few Tipperary pubs by the time I was 17 due to its sensual black velveteen nature.
Its taken me a little longer to get into Scotch and even on to Whiskey. In 1999 I decided to be a tourist in my own country and vistited the Bushmills plant in Co. Antrim and from that point on nothing less then triple distilled Jameson or Jameson 12 are where Im at. That, a few rolls of neopan, a fresh pouch of tobacco and my camera and Im set for life...

Absolut Vanilia.

I did try that Stolichnaya, but it just didn't taste right... if that sounds at all possible.
 
I got turned off whiskey when I was forced to drink it back in 1971, at age 15. These days, after a looong break from the stuff, I actually can take in both Glenfiddich and Bowmore and actually like the stuff. Guess the difference is in the approach - back in the day, you swallowed it to get drunk very fast, these days it´s kindof a mental reset, a slowdown...one shot does the trick. Funny.....just like Dylan. Stayed off the guy for 20+ years, have found him again lately. Damn, his 90:s stuff is great...

I'm a southern boy and Jack is all I need...
I have even done blind taste tests with various whiskey / bourbons / scotches from around the world and Jack is always my pick.
But I like my whiskey for when I'm in a drinkn mood...late nites with good friends and having a great time...when the whiskey comes out, there aint no sip'n here.
