Definitely single malts since I first visited Scotland.
Names like Speyside, Islay, Tamdhu, Dalmore, Glen something, usually sit in my cupboard.

Maker's Mark

Maker's Mark

I appreciate Bmattock's comment. Drink what tastes best to you.

I have not sampled every whiskey (or 'whisky') on the planet; far from it. But of what I have sampled, for my money there's no better value than Maker's Mark. The round pinch bottle with the red wax melted over the cap. Good Kentucky Bourbon.

Just had a nice old fashioned and a petit edmuno last night. Yum.

When you can find a decent bartender, it is difficult to beat a nice old fashioned (with a good burbon) and a lovely cigar (luckily I only smoke a couple a month).

Ok time to open a new bottle of Knockando :)

Marc don't take things so seriously

Don't worry; I just wanted to point out that there's no need to say Single-malt Scotch whiskies taste like crap if you prefer Mr Daniels.
Anyway, next time, I buy a bottle of Mr Daniels. I hate Four Roses, so I hope Daniels is much better ... but it's only a matter of taste!

Good evening everyone!

Being a non spirits drinker, I can add nothing to this debate. However just this little story. Whilst travelling overseas in the '70's I worked in a pub in a small village in Surrey for 6 months, right in the heart of the stockbroker belt. We sold about a dozen or so different scotches from optics plus various malts as well. Every morning whilst preparing the bar for opening, we'd get all the scotches down and top up the bottles from large flagons of cheap homebrand whisky. But we never fiddled with the malts. J and B which is a very light coloured scotch was another we left undoctored. In those 6 months I never had anyone query their drink or look at we in a way that suggested they were onto the game. Hmmmmm!!

I like single malt scotch, but a good blend is never rejected. Balvenie has a nice peat aftertaste. but since I have about a drink a month, I am not one to be expert on this lofty matter.

Had a nice drink of Caol Ila about two weeks ago, a fairly light Islay drop. Then for old times sake I had a taste of Johnny Walker Black, it was smooth and complex and reminded me that there's more to Scotch than just single malts. The barman mentioned that Caol Ila was part of the JW black blend.

you were very very lucky.

Whiskey: Jack Daniels, as in Jack's and Seven :)
Whisky: Glenfiddich Solera. Readily available greateness. With just a little dash of water, please.
By the way, Alan hits a very sensitive spot. IMHO, that sort of thing happens more often then we mortal clients imagine in our worst nightmares. I once went thru the garbage of a very reputed club. There was not one single bottle. So, if I didn't buy the bottle, I always order one of the VERY light coloured ones: Dewar's, J&B...

single malt, the RF of whisky....

single malt, the RF of whisky....

Leica was the first 35mm camera and scotland has the oldest distilleries so that's a perfect match. Not everyone's taste in both cases.
My currently open bottles in the cabinet : Cragganmore, Lagavulin [P.Ximinez matured], Highland Park. All very good by themselves but distinctively different enough to fit the moment. Cheers :)

Jack Daniels - single barrel, gentleman jack, gold medal, jack black --- anything else is inferior - no ice to water down the flavor or dilute this nectar of the gods

Now youre talking....Couldnt agree more!
