The best camera is one that still works!
From the faux film rewind knob that ties in with the various menu functions to that quirky but fascinating analog display on top of the camera. Oh ... and lets not forget the manual 'film adavance' lever for re-cocking the shutter that you can conveniently hook your thumb under while shooting ... and of course the LCD screen that you can flip over to totally deny to the world that you've secumbed to the digital tide!
I showed the RD-1 to a friend who is a semi pro photographer (magazines posters etc) who is generally impressed by nothing in life ... and I mean nothing!!! When I showed him the Epson a week or so ago his reaction was .... "Wow! That is the coolest camera I've seen, now I understand why you bought it!"
If RFF had a 'Cool Wall' ala Top Gear this camera would have to be at the top of it ... surely!

I do miss my R-D1s.... If there is one thing on my wishlist, it's an R-D2 (no, I'm not trying to start that discussion again)... just give me more than 6mp.

Keith,
I love that you love your Epson....AND Top Gear! I have yet to try the RD-1, but considering how much I love the ergonomics of my Bessas, I can only imagine it's the coolest digi out there right meow. Anyone wanna lend me theirs?

Even if I don't use it that often ... for what it cost, why ever sell it?
If it broke I'd probably just keep it so I can admire it and what it actually represents .... the world's first ever digital rangefnder!

Something about this camera manages to melt even the coldest hearts. Perhaps it is radioactive.

i think no other digital camera provokes as many fantastic reactions from other people as the r-d1 does. it's the coolest, period. never parting with mine.

I believe it would go something like this:
Seriously Uncool > Uncool > Cool > Zub Zero > Special R-D1 fridge

They are very cool cameras, but the wind lever is actually why I ended up selling mine. I was switching between an R-D1 and an M4 and the throw effort was different between them, so I was always either overcranking the R-D1 or undercranking the M4. So I eventually sold the R-D1 and got an M8 and that particular problem went away.
I do miss that rotating back, though.

I can't help but wonder why the Epson didn't sell better at the time it was released?
If the roles had been reversed and the M8 had been the first of the breed with the RD-1 following on at a third or half the price a year or so later with a 10 megapixel 1.3 crop sensor like the Leica's ... it would have decimated Leica sales possibly.

Been doing research on the RD-1 since this thread started. I guess I've avoided doing so because I knew that I'd want one. I think I'm going to sell my EOS gear to buy one from the flea bay. OH goodness it looks sexy.

Ok, I hate you all. Just when I thought I had gotten rid of my GAS for a short while by purchasing an M3 (I missed my old one terribly) you all start this thread! I'm going to be looking at RD-1s all night! I really like the idea of a cool wall. I'm glad that the new Top Gear season has started airing on BBC America, the US version was just embarrassing.
Coolness and user experience aside, how is the IQ?

Maybe just to convince you totally a few people could throw in some pics here of their Epsons.
Mine's had my black 35mm f1.2 Nokton on it since I got it ... and that looks sexy!
The other positive about this camera is I adjusted the rangefinder infinity setting yesterday and was amazed at just how easy it was ... happily it fixed the back focus issue I was having.

Please convince me. My poor Canon 7D has been sitting, unused for over 2 months now. I've got a 10-22mm for it, a 100 2.8, and a 50 1.4...and I haven't put down my Bessa R since I got it. If I had a digital version I'd be in rangefinder heaven. Good grief can you say photographic butterflies?!
