I've just worked out why I've never liked my FM3A's viewfinder!

I bought a +0.5 diopter, presently on my FA. I can see much more clearly with it than with the plain "window glass" eyepiece that comes with the camera. This is with my current-prescription eyeglasses on. It appears that while the built-in -1 diopter may be right for most people, there can be times when it is not optimum. In my case, I'm nearsighted, so my glasses already have a negative power. A previous eye doctor once remarked that she was increasing my prescription by an additional 1/4 diopter, "since most people see better that way." It could well explain why I needed to add a +1/4. I didn't go back to her, but I'm not sure if my present doctor may have done the same thing. I'm thinking that this may be the case for many who wear corrective lenses for myopia. Case in Point: I believe Keith said his left eye is over-corrected.

I have an FM2n & F3 and if I remember rightly, the research I did confirmed that the - figure is built into the camera and that the correction needed is only to focus 1 metre ahead i.e. not on the subject per se - that is the job of the lens; we focus on the mirror.

As Keith has already stated Nikon D's have a dioptre correction system (so does the Leica 111f, G and others for all I know). With this system you turn the dial (of in the case of the Leica's move an 'arm') and until the meter markings are sharp in the finder.

Before I did the full research I set sail and bought a +2 dioptre per a telephone call to my optician who checked my prescription. Of course it was a total failure and sits here in the cabinet all boxed up and sad!

Nikon have a colour chart of all dioptres and camera fits. Here is the link:

But unlike laser eye surgery lenses and cameras seldom cause permanent irreversible eye damage.

Not to mention you can't sell your laser eye surgery in the classifieds when you eventually decide it wasn't quite what you wanted! 😀

OM cameras do have a minus diopter rating.

OM cameras do have a minus diopter rating.

After reading thru this thread I was surprised to find that nobody has mentioned the OM negative diopter rating. Carl Shipman's book covers it in the chapter on Viewing and Focusing. He covers the availability of dioptric corrective lenses in eight different diopter ratings from +2 to -5 for the camera and states that without a correction lens the diopter rating of the viewfinder eyepiece is -0.5. The book I'm taking this from covers the OM-1, OM-1n, OM-2, & OM-2n.
