Jeff Ascough under NDA for new Rangefinder

skibeerr, because they have no reason to. Any sales of RF cameras that Canon would make would be a tiny blip in their total sales.

It's not a market at all for them, but if they did make a new RF, they would produce their own proprietary lens mount. They have the facility to make anything they want.

April fool jokes should be played only on April 1st. Also they should be outlandish enough that you are only fooled if you are not paying attention. Starting a rumour a day or two before April 1st about something that could credibly exist is just lame. Because when you point & laugh "April fool" people will reply "You didn't fool us, you just mislead us". Big difference.

It's just a buildup. He is busy all day in Photoshop working on tomorrows blooper. "I finally found an image serving host and here is what you have all been waiting for..." Move on, nothing to see here.

good sense of humor there, buddy...

While it is now readily apparent that this is an April Fool's joke, I would have to question the reasoning that prompted him to undertake this little prank. This little episode could be the point where Jeff Ascough's credibility has "jumped the shark".

Do you guys think this new thing will help lower my golf handicap? The only group of gear junkies worst than us cameraphiles are golfers. Try living with that double affliction.

What about audiophiles? I was just about to leave the vinyl world when I got myself a record cleaner. Suddenly I got a new record player, a new cartridge which will require me to upgrade my preamp, which will cause me to buy a line stage, which will create a greater need for new speakers, which will... I think gear junkies are everywhere.

A shame that this is most likely a April Fools joke. A new drf would be so sweet.

If we're saying this joke is lame, has there ever been an April Fools prank where it was awesome to have been pranked?

I've seen some pranks that were pretty clever. Maybe not *awesome* to be on the receiving end, but a good laugh was had by all.

This is just a fake gear rumor. Not particularly clever or hard to do. Heck, you could make this **** up all day if you wanted to. Happens all the time on the internet. It wasn't even on April 1st. That's why I think it's lame.

Even worse, it just seems like a publicity stunt.

As an April Fool, it doesn't even register.

This is one of mine. I sketched it out with a writer friend, we had a tech build one from left-over parts and we featured it in a magazine.

A few years later it appeared in a book by a historian. THen - Gibson produced the damn thing!

It's not readily apparent at all. My calender also reports that it's not even April 1 in Europe.

My bets are still on a Ricoh GXRF, Epson R-D2 and Fuji - in that order.

Ascough used Leica rangefinders for years and then switched to pro Canon DSLRs. Not only are they much bulkier and heavier than his former setup, he carries two of them, all day. That's not fun and makes you - the wedding photographer - much more conspicuous.

I am sure that the "game changer" for him would be able to go back to smaller rangefinder cameras while still maintaining the low-light high-iso image quality and framing accuracy of slr-type cameras.

So my bet still stands that this is not a spoof.

"HCB/Tri-X mode" That would be a Kodak trademark. Naw, that gives it away, you don't go from NDA to blurting out that the camera in question, is using something legally trademark protected in one day. I was hoping, like most of us, until I read that. Oh well, someday someone is going to do it. Maybe Cosina will notice all the attention, and do a digital R5 or Zeiss. Back to hoping with the rest of you. Sigh.

Well yes, that was the bit that was mildly amusing. But Twittering that you are testing a new rangefinder with a 35mm.1.2 lens hardly counts as one of the most side-splitting japes of recent memory...
