Jessops go into administration

15 ish years ago in the West end of Edinburgh there was 4 camera shops within 5 minutes of each other Youngs, Lizars, Jessops and Edinburgh Cameras all selling secondhand stuff and know all gone, maybe if they had concentrated on selling the secondhand cameras etc and not tried to compete with the big online places they would still be there, who knows.

Jessops demise

I occasionally buy (bought) film from their Bluewater branch, it always amused me how when you asked for it they would disappear for a minute out the back door and then return with a crate of random film and put it down on the counter for you to rummage through as if you were at a car boot sale 🙂

Last year I went into my local branch (Crawley) and asked for the price of Tri-X, the salesman didn't know what Tri-X was! On explaining to him the history of one of the top black and white films, he said that he had worked in the industry for 10 years and had never heard of Tri-X !!
Enough said? :bang:

My experience of Jessops was mainly the shop in New Oxford Street and, until it closed a few years ago, the one in Swiss Cottage. The only reason for going into Jessops was when I needed something in a hurry and didn't have time to order online. Years ago, when there were more photographic shops to choose from, I never went into Jessops at all. My experience was that the staff generally didn't have any knowledge of photography -- the Tri-X story is typical -- or interest in serving customers and their prices were seldom competitive. All they had to do was take a look at how B&H in New York is run and they'd still be in business. England may be a 'nation of shopkeepers' but it often seems that we hate serving others and consequently are not very good at it.

Many years ago I used to go to their branch in Swiss Cottage, also the one a little further up in Finchley/Frognal, if memory serves. Expensive, with limited range it was always a choice of last resort. When customers turned in droves to online shopping the writing was on the wall. I agree w/ Lawrence, B&H could have provided a model for them, with a flagship store in London selling merchandise both from a showroom and online. I am sorry for the people who have lost their jobs. These are difficult times everywhere and I hope they find work soon.

I was just back in UK looking after sick family for two years. First time back in 20 years. I can see the faces of the two guys and the woman working in the Llandudno branch from whom I bought a few bits and pieces. Regardless of the product offered it is a terrible personal story. Their options are very limited. I feel for them. I buy from KEH, Adorama and B&H because I am living in Asia. If I ever went back to UK I would continue to do so.

I bought my X100, X-Pro1, XF 35mm and XF 60mm from an independent camera shop in Glasgow. Yes they were a bit more expensive, but they are now the only camera shop left in Glasgow (Curry's etc don't count).
