I have made arrangements with someone to get myself an m8....
The lenses I have are the Canon 25mm ltm (40mm filter thread ) and a summar.
A few questions, how important is the 6 bit coding? How do I go about this?
Next, I know I'm going to need the ir cut filters.... will I be able to find them for these 2 lenses?
Thirdly, I plan to also use it for infrared photography as well, which means my asking. ... Did canon ever make an IR filter for the 25?
Any camera setup tips for infrared photography?

Finding IR cut filters in the correct diameter can be a pain with odd size lenses. This could be a particular problem with your Summar given its odd size - I cannot recall what it is but have a rough idea it may have been 36mm or 37mm or something like this. But you can try what I did at least with respect to other lenses and the Canon 25mm in particular. You will be able to find on eBay a "step up adapter ring" from 40mm to 40.5mm or to 41mm, or as in my case to 43mm. You can then buy a 40.5mm, 41mm or 43mm etc IR cut filter and use that with your lens by mounting the appropriate adapter ring. In fact by swapping adapter rings as needed you will be able to use the same IR cut filter with various lenses of a range of different sizes. This is my reason for going with the 43mm IR cut filter - it gave me the flexibility of using it with 39mm diameter lenses, 40mm Canon lenses and a 41mm Summarit lens all just be swapping the adapter ring over.
A couple of rings on ebay. Search ebay for others if these are not what you need.

As to infrared filters I do believe that Canon did have an IR filter - I recall some years ago buying a whole set of original Canon filters in various colors (red, green, orange, yellow etc and maybe deep red for IR). Failing this there is nothing to stop you from doing what I suggested above by using adapter rings and a generic deep red IR filter.

Thanks for a good answer

ok, any thoughts on using the summar as my main lens?
my m8 will be here soon - --- eventually will have to hunt down a good case - - is the thumbs up worth having?
any other accessories i should hunt down? I'm certainly going to be doing some infrared photography

Make sure you know the details on collapsing that Summar on an M8 before you do, Blake! If it's too deep, it might wreck the shutter or sensor. I'm sure someone here will know the details on that!?
Happy shooting!

Congrats on the M8. Keep in mind that a 50mm lens will act as a longer lens with the smaller than full frame sensor of the M8.

I seem to remember a thread on here about several lenses that were able to collapse into the M8.
The Summar amongst them. I tried this when I still had my M8 and it was true.
So, if you could figure out any differences between an Elmar and a Summar, you'd know.

I find digital Ms slippery as soapbars personally so i use Thumbs up on each body but Thumbies or handgrips are perhaps more handy for you, matter of tastes as usual.
You will find UV/IR filters you're after if you type "Rocolax" in Google or same most probably. Those filters are effective and inexpensive but they don't have internal filter threads, or they did not as far as my samples are concerned at least.
SDHC cards of 8GB or 16GB are enough and you don't need faster speeds than 30 MB/s or 40/MBs in my experience.
The M8 was shipped with Capture One eight years ago and the latter is still the best converter IMO but it is again a matter of tastes.

Sweet. The summar is a 36 I believe
The Summar is A36 for push-on or clamp-on filters but the filter thread is 34mm. Quite a few 34mm filters around it seems these days, although I don't know about the availability of IR-cut filters. Some of these less common, smaller filter sizes seem to have resurfaced on video cameras in recent years.

Quite impossible to wreck the shutter or sensor with any lens that did not wreck the shutter or film on a film M camera as the mount to sensor distance is obviously identical. The problem can be the diameter of the lens as the throat of the M8 is slightly more narrow and the exposure meter cells protrude. Mount and dismount extended to prevent wobble and be very gentle when you try to collapse it the first time.Make sure you know the details on collapsing that Summar on an M8 before you do, Blake! You'll need to get that Canon lens coded as something, probably an Elmarit 21 pre-asph, to prevent cyan vignetting with the necessary IR cut filter. Note that the framelines must match the lens coding.
If you want to use it without coding you'll need Cornerfix in postprocessing or the flat-field correction in C1 or a flat field plugin for Lighroom/Photoshop.

I use a SOOGZ on my A36 stuff. Clap on to A36 with a threaded E39 in front. Many 39mm filters available. The Summar is A36 for push-on or clamp-on filters but the filter thread is 34mm. Am looking now for an ir filter so I can shoot false color infrared as well as black and white infrared. What is the frequency cutoff?
Am I better off using the original leitz ir filter or one of the many others?
Have gotten a rare earth summicron and a Canon 28mm 3.5 added to my kit...
So, I'll have to also hunt down uv ir cut filters for daily use for all lenses
