Jupiter-3! I remember why I love you.

Very nice Brian. Can the later '74 J3s be adjusted for close focus? What about 0.7m? Also, do your J3s have a bit of distortion, say when shooting brick walls, or is it just mine?

They are amazingly good I agree ... I'm looking forward to using mine for the up coming FSU contest! :)

What film is that by the way? It's got that gritty look and tones that I noticed with the first roll of Foma I used recently!

I must have missed this. What FSU contest?

I love mine too but it's a little fragile for me to use on a daily basis.

The '74 J-3 could also be modified.

The "little Lug" that acts as a stop for close and infinity has to be removed. The lens will then focus as close as the screws in the guide rail allow. The mount has to be filed to allow the RF pickup wheel to follow the cam into the mount.

Distortion: Sonnars are not as corrected for aberrations as are planars. Adds to the beauty of the rendered image.

It's a Feature, Not a Flaw.

Thanks Brian, I will shoot the J3 a bit more. Do the J3 and J8 have about the same distortion? I haven't noticed it before on the J8, but noticed it in my first few dozen shots with the J3:

It is likely that they do, maybe not so pronounced.

I've not really tested them for barrel/pincussion distortion. Anything that I need that type of reproduction on, it will be a job for the 60/2.8 Micro-Nikkor. I've taken pictures of a few fence slats- and yes, pincushions!

Brian,

I was just wondering how to date a Jupiter-3? Do you have any info? I kind of like the black chrome ones, is there any difference over the chrome versions? Any info that you have would be very interesting!

Regards, Simon

Most J-3's: the first two digits of the serial number is the year it was made.

The Black lenses are beautiful, but I find the earlier lenses are better optically. Some is luck of the draw.
