Jupiter 8

I have a jupiter 8, that came with my zorki-4k, that has rather oily aperture blades. Now I don't know much about these lens, but in general I've been advised to avoid oily blades on lenses. Is this a major issue, or even an issue at all? Another question. I have a rather nice Canon 50 F1.4 m39 lens that should fit my zorki. Anyone know of any issues stopping me using it? Cheers Matt

As the diapraghms on RF lenses are completely manual, oil on the blades is not a problem unless it causes internal reflections. If you do want to clean it, instructions are on my wesite here http://pentax-manuals.com/repairs.htm

The Canon is a very good lens and there should be no problem in using it on the Zorki.

issue 1 - on a relatively inexpensive lens like the j8, opening the lens to clean it will cost more than it's worth, and may not help - in fact aside from a risk of gumming, I don't know what effect it may have.

issue 2 - nope, no problems I can think of. Use the Canon - it's a fantastic lens.

I had a look at my Jupiter 8 a couple of nights ago and realised that the blades were very oily. In fact I was about to start a thread about just this when I see you have done so. I think my lens was made in 1977 - the serial number starts like this anyway. It seems to be in great condition other than the oily blades. It doesn't look as if it has been tampered with in any way, so I concluded the oil must have been there to start with! Funny though because when I got the lens a couple of weeks back I can't remember seeing it on the blades. However as everything look clear I am just going to hope I get some good pictures - but that doesn't happen to be my highest priority at present!

The oil bleeds out of the grease and "creeps". If the lens has been warmed, it will have speeded to process up. 😉

a little oil on the aperture blades is ok on rf lenses.
