does the jupiter 8 made for the kiev have the same filter size and hood size as a ltm jupiter 8.

also, those with an 8, do you use a hood and do you think it's necessity.

The filter size for the J8 in Kiev mount is 40.5mm. I have not used a hood with mine, but use it in its "never-ready case" with the flap positioned to block the sun. Read that trick in a 1940's "35mm Photographic Technique" book. Now I know why the old cases had non-removable tops.
 
I use a step up filter ring 40.5 to 49 and than another step up ring 49 to 52. This allows me to use my 52mm filters and also gives a nice small hood which looks really nice. The hood fits on my J-8 Kiev and LTM j-8 and also the Helios lens for the kiev.

I haven't felt a great need for a lens hood normally.

Joe - I also use the 40.5-49 step-up ring,
but then hang one of my many OM
shades on the front. The 100mm rubber
shade seems to work with no viginetting (sp?)
without blocking out the viewfinder image.

If you have a snap-on shade with series VI adapter for the Canon 50/1.8 it will fit the J8 as well, the external diameter is the same, 42mm.
 
Joe, I'm a 'hoodie' -- I use a hood on every lens I shoot with. I do a lot of shooting outdoors towards the sun and I've yet to find a lens that doesn't flare to some degree under those circumstances. Even in less stressful lighting lenses tend to pick up some microflare if no hood is used. (Bill Mattocks ran a long thread on this a while back)

Because the J8 is a mainline lens for me, I splurged on a very nice metal CV 40.5mm hood with cap. The hood is probably worth more than the lens, but I love it! :D

you mean a push on hood?

i have that square hood that i overpaid for, it's a push on made for 50/1.9 & 35/3.5, and it's a series vi / 42 mm.

i also prefer and use a hood on all my lenses (except the 35/2.8 canon - can't find one that fits & works).

is your a cv hood? for what lens was that made?
or a cq (cameraquest) hood?

Joe, it's a generic hood with cap, in 40.5mm thread. Purchased from CameraQuest. (The cap has Voigtlander written on it -- maybe only the cap is CV??)

i think cq has the hoods made and the cv cap happens to fit.

that hood was 30 bucks u.s. if i recall correctly!
i'm just too cheap for that. ha!

i'm hoping oscar's tip works, it should, and my folly purchase will work for something other than reminding me to not get excited while bidding.

Another option, is you want something more modern is to grab one of those nice 40.5mm Hoya vented hoods. I got a 43mm one for my pancake and then attached a 40.5-43 adapter to it. Vented hoods are way cool :cool: :p

Leo I also got a 43mm one (needed one in fact) but I've seen 40.5 Hoya/Kenko ones on eBay from time to time and at kevincameras.com too. Not cheap though, I thought the KK ones were $40 each...

On the bay, it depends but you can expect paying $20-$40 for one, the price changes a lot and I've even seen FF (for free) ones on some forums sometimes... There's also a Walz vented in both 40.5 and 43mm diameter, even a 40mm for Canon if I'm not wrong...
 
the 40.5mm vented hoods have been going for US$60-70 recently on the bay.

Hello Gene, do you have an image of that generic hood & cap. I may be interested in getting one even if it is 30 bucks.

My current screw-in hood was less than $20, but I don't trust using it in the soft aluminum filter threads of the Jupiter 8. Here is an image of it.

Joe is correct -- they're generic, with the option of purchasing a CV hood cap that fits over it snugly.

Here's the one I have -- I picked up the black version because I use it mainly on a black J8.
