I have a Jupiter-8m that says it is a 53mm/2 lens. I thought they were all 50mms. the Helios 103 is a 53mm, but is f/1.8. I don't get it. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

most "50mm" lenses are not exactly 50mm, some are 51.2 mm , some are 53.1 etc. these FSU normal lenses are just being a little more honest in their markings, concerning the focal lenght of the lens.

Most lenses are not exactly what they are labled, but the marketing department says putting "50mm ish" on the front ring isn't a good idea.

When Popular Photography does their lens testing they document the tested lenses exact focal length. I am sure other testers do the same.

i know most lenses aren't what they say, but I've never heard of a jupiter 8m marked as a 53mm. All of the ones I find are marked 50mm.

Don't worry about it. Your Jupiter probably has a focal length of 52.3mm just like the Zeiss Sonnar it was copied from. Zeiss labelled all them "50mm" too, and nobody worried about that either.
