I just got the paper and yak-hair package today, and all I have to say is this:

Wow. My god is this ever a beautiful lens.

Glass is spotless. It's always so nice to look straight down a big, honkin', long and fast lens. It's just this massive expanse of spotless, coated glass.

I got it, threw it on the M2, and snapped half a roll right away. Results to follow.

This means I have the Jupiter 12-8-9 combo for the M2. I'd really like a J-3, if anyone has one they're looking to sell! Fast is nice!

I'm very excited for this lens. It has a great feel in the hand, and it's one of the nice chrome ones, with the metal lenscap. Feels very solid, and appears to focus properly close up. (According to the M2)

Anyone have wonderful/horrible experiences with this lens that I should hear about?

Congrats! Please post the results, I'm on the edge of going for a j-9. I have a j-3 en route right now, but that 85 is also calling me.

Be alert that this lens is subject to flare. Get a good, large hood.
Just a suggestion. See hummingbird on my gallery.

One interesting thing is what I saw when I had 2 J-9s in my hands. One was from 1980 (mine) and the other was from 1968. The 1980 had the one color yellow-orange coating on all surfaces, but the 1968 had the coating like modern lenses with orange, violet and green reflections... is this normal?

im looking for a M42 j9 to use on my pentax. where did you get yours from? oleg doesnt have any, not fedka i dont think.

Macpod,

You can get M42 J-9 quite easily in Shanghai, price between RMB 280-380. New old stock Coated or Uncoated are available. Also J-9 Avtomat with auto-diaphrm that fits nikon(i think) turns up from time to time.

really? From that place you told me about? i went there to look for the zorki so didnt pay attention to lenses. I dont think ive seen any new old stock at the place next t the trainstation.

Macpod, did you find that place ok? I don;t really like the owner but sometimes they have nice stuff.

For J-9, there is one shop at the train station that specialise in Russian Binoculars and lenses, try there. Also the camera market Near DaLian Rd Subway station there is a place that modify M42 J-9 for Nikon mount.
