Jupiter 9 Close up & Wide Open

Hi Folks,
I wasn't sure where to put this thread since I shot these pics with a bessa R3A and a Jupiter 9. Anyhow, I thought some folks might be interested in seeing what the J-9 can do close up and wide open.


I do love my hibiscus flowers, but I sure wish I could film them better.

A strawberry I left for the birds to pick at.

Personally, I think I may have to stick with an aperture between 2.8 and 4 in terms of the OOF or bokeh. The bokeh here at f2 just looks to blobby and amorphous to me.

I do have a couple of other pics. Nothing scientific, mind you.

This is almost identical to the third shot. The aperture is somewhere in between 2.8-4.

I am planning to do a comparison test between at least the Jupiter 9 and the Tele Elmarit fat one, maybe the two 135's as well. The black uncoated Elmar and the coated chrome Hektor. I definitely want wide open shots. Maybe tomorrow...

I don't have the ltm Jupiter 9 but I do have it in M42. Man, I love that lens. My SLR is practically a fixed lens camera. The Jupiter 9 is almost always on it these days. Wonderful lens.

Great photos. So the sweet spot is about f3.5.

Man, can't wait to get going with my J-9.

Yesterday I shipped it to Fedka, it's ungoing an interior cleaning and collimation.

Should be back in a week.

I was messing around with my J3 last weekend and was curious to see how it was at min focus and max aperture?

They are a surprising lens and I can't believe I used to be so wary of buying one .. and it's not like they cost an arm and a leg!

Are those little horses for carousels? Reminds me of motion with them all lined up like that.

Yes ... they're off a kid's merry go round. A friend of mine was repainting them for a customer and I couldn't resist lining them up for a pic before they went back to their normal lives!

After seeing your shots I lust for the J9 for my Kiev II! 😛

Sherm, those are lovely pictures... Looks like you live in a colorful place! I don't mind the out-of-focus areas in the wide-open shots at all. I find it easier to focus my attention on the hibiscus in the wide-open shot, in fact, and the J9 certainly seems to yield a sharp image at that aperture.

I've wanted to try my Jupiter 9 in Kiev/Contax mount. It looks like it should be everything I've hoped for.

I'm trying to decide which I like better. I think the answer is... both! Each one has its virtues, its own character.

I've been trying to learn a little about lens design and to learn to see the difference it makes in images. When I looked at your pictures it seemed to me that I could see something "Sonnar-like" in the out-of-focus areas: they don't seem perfectly smooth and featureless, but instead seem to have a "painterly" character, as if the background were painted in little strokes. (My description may be the thing that's really out of focus, but I'm not sure how else to put it.) In any case, I was pleased to discover that a Jupiter-9 is indeed considered a Sonnar-type lens, which is one with a relatively small number of elements among which is a cemented triplet. So perhaps I'm making progress in my lens study...

Fedka's repair guy received my J9 yesterday.

Got another email last night- Lens is done and shipping out. That was fast.

Got a silver Canon 85mm "Torpedo" Viewfinder to use with the J9.
