Jupiter-9 with R3M: which framelines?

I bought a "mint" J9 on eBay, and it arrived today...and lo and behold, it really is mint! Focus seems good, aperture's smooth...I'll shoot a roll with it later this week.

If anyone else is using this combination, can you tell me which set of framelines has been more useful to you, the 90 or the 75? The 90 is theoretically closer to the J9's 85mm, but I know some of the Russian lenses are not quite the exact focal length they say they are.

Neither do the framelines in the camera show you exactly what will be in the picture... If you use the "90" framelines, you can be sure you'll get what is inside the frame plus something extra. And IMO it's better to get something extra than to chop off somebody's top of head 😀

No lens, not just a Soviet one, is exactly the marked focal length: but none differs very much from it. As Ondrej says, you'll be best off with the 90 frame.

90mm is just fine!
My experience when using it on a Bessa R at f 2 for headshots I had to focus the tip of the nose to have the eyes in focus.
My specimen also was prone to flare. An Exakta hood (48mm) was a remedy.

Well, one thing I did notice testing it yesterday. When trying to focus on infinity, the rangefinder patch goes sharp somewhat before the lens reaches infinity on the barrel. And when I turn the barrel to infinity, the patch goes a bit past sharp. Close distances seem more or less accurate. Is this normal? I'm using the CV M/TLM adapter.

Well, how do the photos look? Are they in focus?

I made myself some shims out of various materials--inkjet paper, onionskin, cardstock, and a ruined roll of 120--and found that the onionskin shim allows the lens to focus properly at infinity. But I wonder if this will mess up the close focus when the lens is wide open.

In any event, I'll shoot a roll over the weekend and will find out.
