Jupiter 9

Hi to all.
I'm thinking to get a jupiter 9 85mm. f.2 LTM for my 3c. Sometimes I need extra speed than the Elmar f4. for indoor photography.
Did anybody try this lens before?

I just recently got one. I really like it, dof is very shallow at f2- an effect that i like a lot. Its quite slow to focus though (I mean going from close focus to infinity or back) - i read here that its due to its design. I think if you get one in good condition (and that may be hard) - its well worth the money. I havent tested my lens extensively yet, but I think it may be not focusing correctly at longer distances. I had some shots that were about 5-10 yards away that were out of focus, and I am not sure if I was not carefully focusing or if it needs some kind of calibration.

As with most FSU gear, a good Jupiter 9 is a joy to have. Unfortunately there are lots of not so good ones out there. I would recommend getting one from Yuri at fedka.com -- his stuff is checked before he sells and he offers a 10 day return/refund period. I have two Jupiter 9s from him, and both are excellent.

If they are working correctly and collimated properly, they are a very nice lens. However, in my experience about 9 out of 10 need work, some more than others. The good news is that they are easier to fix the the J3 and so far (fingers crossed), I haven't come across one that can't be fixed.

Fedka is offering a lens repair service now for $35. So if you find yourself with a out of focus J-9, it can be sorted out for a decent price.

In fact, there is. 135mm/f4. Good, cheap, fun. Of course, I haven't been able to shoot Stone Henge with mine...

Anybody know whether Fedka will collimate a J-9 to focus properly on a Leica? Obviously, I can contact Fedka and ask but thought someone here might already know.

I have a bad one (from a FSU vendor) that I'm thinking of sending to him - he doesn't exclude any lenses from his collimation service so far as I can tell.

A while back, Cambridge Camera in New York (a vendor with an apalling reputation) was offeing new black J-9's. I contacted them and asked if it would focus properly on a Leica. They wouldn't provide a straight answer (little surprise there) or offer to provide a refund it there was a problem.

Thanks, Graybeard. I didn't realize that he offered a "collimation service" in addition to a cleaning service. Anybody have any experiences to share regarding the collimation service?

At one time, I lived close enough to Marflex in NJ (an official, and competent, Rollei and Linhof service center) that it was practical for me to bring a camera to them for work rather than mail it in.

Krikor, the Rollei service technician, would put the camera on their collimator while you waited and check the lens focus and centering in order to provide a service cost estimate - even if you were in for something else. Fine customer service at that place.

Atlantic shipping would mean that it wouldn't be very cost effective for the North American members but, as long as I don't get swamped, I would be happy to collimate J9s from the European members. However, particularly if it is badly out, it might mean the removal of a small amount of metal from the front aperture ring and because of the construction, it can mean that the aperture scale is displaced.

I just got a film developed, shot with J-9 on M2 and I was surprised -- they were all in focus! 😀 not so when I used it on Bessa R, the longer distance shots were out of focus. I wonder if it had to do with the shorter RF base? still need to test it on a FSU camera.
