Many thanks, yesterday was a great day, having all my family round, more books added to my must read pile, a nice new fishing hat and then a quick net surf found the Elmar on for £25...a great end to my birthday, now l n need to find a IIIa or IIIc for it to live with:D

Nice one, my Elmar was from 1936 as well. I enjoyed using it but sold it (to a guy in Canada) to fund something new. I found the VALOO enlarger lens hood a great addition even if it did look odd!

I might see it around Durham one day :D

if you do, stop me and say hello, are you local to Durham

glass and iris are fine for its age, wish i looked so good and l am only 51:D
Fantastic lens Mike, capable of superb results stopped down just a little.
I find it difficult to see any difference in sharpness between my slightly later 3.5/5cm Elmar and my latest version 50mm Elmar.

As a rough guide, if the serial number on a Leitz lens is below 600k it's from before 1945.

The VALOO "hood" will work on it, but the aperture scales don't line up properly between the VALOO and the pre-war Elmar.
