If you have a hunt through the threads on this forum, there have been several threads with information of how to clean the shutter and get it working. I can point you to a copy of the Canon repair manual. (It's on my website). If you end up with any problems, I am sure someone here will be able to help.

alright, so sounds like sticking it in the oven is bad.
but if a repair is gonna cost me 100$, forget that. i'll google stuff, and see if i think i can handle it.

if i cant fix it however, i'm sad.

Most find it easier to take out the front element rather than the rear one. 😉

oh really? i found a bunch of stuff saying to take off the rear element which i now realize is the glass in the back. i can see the shutter through that, and it makes sense that i could swap it with some lighter fluid till it frees. but getting to it is weird.

alright guys, real sorry to bring something this old back up, but.
i havent had much time at all to do anything with the camera, but this weekend, i plan on conquering it. anyway, i now understand the deal with this camera. the front has to be taken apart using a spanner wrench, i'm not sure where to get one of these? then the blade is cleaned with a lighter fluid type deal. alright, sounds easy, its not.

it took me the longest time to figure out how to get the thing apart, because every site i saw just assumed i knew how to do that. but i get it now. i just need one of those spanners, where'd you guys get yours and is there anything else i could use thats maybe more readily available? i'm so ready to get shooting, but this is holding me back.

i might try heating, that makes sense too, but sticking stuff in the oven, other than food, just doesnt seem like a good idea?

I used a pair of needle-nosed pliers on mine. Luckily they were a bit stiff and in need of oiling which helped keep tham open in the correct position.

I opened them up so that the points of the pliers fitted into either notch in the ring that retains the lens. I then very genty turned them.

Be really careful not to slip - you don't want any scratches on that lovely lens.

alright, i get it. i'm going looking in my garage to see what tools i can find. needle nose pliers? i know theres some in there, and i guess grinding down the tip of them would help?
