The focus shift is real and very big. The lens is unusable as an f1.5 or f2 unless you're willing to guess how much to offset the focus, or lean inward, or whatever other workaround people have come up with. I hate stuff like that; I get frustrated by things that do not "just work flawlessly with no guessing" so I will not bother using it wider than f2.8. At 2.8 it is very sharp and accurately focused. Same for all the apertures smaller than f2.8 but f2 and f1.5 are both way off.

Chris, I think the Sonnar is an odd choice for a lens to be used stopped down - the ZM Planar 50/2.0 is a technically superior lens in all respects if you are looking for high resolution (especially stopped down) and lack of focus shift.

Still, I wish you great enjoyment with this lens, but it remains, for your needs, an odd choice in my opinion...

Thanks guys for sharing your great shots with the Sonnar. Creamy bokeh of Sonnar is definitely my favorite, probably more than Plannar which can be a bit too "dramatic" but I'm also digging the whole gentle, classy atmosphere this lens shows. I can't afford one right now, but seeing your photos made me take out my Nikkor-HC 50/2. This is my favorite portrait lens.

Sonnar and Tessar are, personally, type of lenses that reminds me "good lens" is not all about sharpness, speed, highly corrected look or other technical details modern lens designs got. (or of course whether it FS or not.)

As Mike said, it's about the end result, and I'm loving what I'm seeing. :D

I'm not looking for the highest resolution, I have a Summicron 50 for that. I am using the Sonnar at f4 and 5.6 for people, that gives enough depth of field for the face to all be in focus while the background drops off and the background looks nicer than with the Summicron or the Planar.

Thanks to this thread (and Roger`s musings about this lens) I joined the club ... :)
