Well, it's one of those things: if I can have only one camera (but can have lots of lenses) I'd have to go with the most versatile. Picking only from cameras I already own, that would have to be my Canon 5D (original). The cameras given up which would cause the most pain would be my OM-4T, my Hexar RFs and my M3 - though maybe not in that order. Fortunately I don't have to do any of that 😀 Right now I'm playing with my new (to me) Rolleicord. My first roll through it is drying. Not my choice of "one and only" camera - but I already love it.

If it came down to just one camera and lens, it would be an M2 and a 50 for me, probably a Canon 50/1.8 as a brilliant all- rounder.

The poll is "one camera" not "one camera & one lens", so I choose an RF with interchangeable lens.
In my case, it´s a Contax II with three lenses: J12, J11 and a J3 or a CZJ Tessar 2.8.
Another choice would be a 35 SLR with 24; 50 and 200 mm plus a 2x telecenverter.
BTW, I wouoldn´t choose any battery dependant camera.

D700, no question. It normally sits at home while I use my film cameras (135 RF & SLR, 120 SLRs) or smaller digitals (4/3, m4/3, P&S, IR-P&S) but it's the one camera that can handle absolutely anything that I want to do. The rest are just what I prefer to use.

I was thinking the same thing when I considered nominating my D700 ... then chose my OM-1 for some reason! 😛

That is a pretty silly question, as half my cameras cost less than a lens for the other half. However, for 30 years my go to camera was the Pentax MX kit, and it is still my most complete kit with 24mm through 400mm lenses. But I guess, if someone stuck a gun to my head and said I had to get rid of all but one camera, I would keep the Olympus C5050 Zoom Digital P&S, as that has been my grab and go camera since I bought it. However, I lately have also been using an old 6x6 folder for a stick it in my pocket camera. Some times I carry both, the Oly for color, and the folder for B&W.

See, I can not even answer the question with just one camera.

Beeing only a hobby photographer, I would get any interchangeable 35mm RF (I own the Hexar RF). If I could afford it today, I may have selected a M9. But this is outside my budget.

Nikon F2 is my current (and basically only) choice these days.

If I had the money, I'd buy a M6 TTL with a Summicron 50 and live happily ever after.

I went with digital slr because it's cheaper after the body and lens purchases, and a slr is is more flexible in the type of photography.

If we had a second choice it would be a film slr. Probably my OM-1.

Just picked up an M8.2 and am in that initial stage of infatuation. I LOVE shooting with this camera. The infatuation will eventually wear off, but for now, if only one camera, it would be this M8.2.

But I do still treasure my iiif, M6 and Canon F1n.

Have a Nikon D700, and although I agree that it can do pretty much anything, it doesn't inspire me. Same with my old F4s and FM2n. Great workhorses, but don't light a fire in the belly.

My battered Pentax LX.
Go anywhere, do anything. With my set of 28, 50, 100 and 135, I am covered for everything.
It's the best long exposure camera I can think off, it's rugged enough to be hanging at my side whatever the weather and I like the rendering of the smc lenses.
I wonder why I am stll checking ebay...

Years ago I used just one camera, a Rollei 6008i. It was a good compromise of portability and large negatives.
