Just One Camera

I would take my M6 with my 35 mm summicron. The M6 will keep shooting even though I run out of battery and the 35 mm gives me a little more of the world on the film. And as the M6 is the most expensive of my rangefinders I would be able to sell it and get eneugh to pay for an airline ticket home if I get into some trouble or loose my money.

Having travelled to many different places and countries I can say that though it would be more than feasable to bring only 1 camera, I've felt more comfortable knowing I brought 2 or 3.

My favourite cameras (right now. Things can change in the near future) are my Bessa R, my Leitz Minolta CL and my Leica M2. Nowadays I would bring the M2 without blinking an eye (contrary to my thoughts of a few months ago).
My favourite lenses are now my J8 50/2, my CV25/4, my J12 35/2.8 and my J9 85/2. I'd bring all of them.

If I had no other choice and really could bring only one camera and one lens than it would be the M2 with J8.

Since when do vodka bottles freeze? 🙂

In Mongolian winter vodka does freeze. I don't know at which temperature but leave your bottle out at night when it's windy and -35 degrees C and the next morning you'll have a hard time pouring a shot. 😛

I would take my RD1.
I don't have an RD1. But if I were going on a trip around the world, I would buy one today. Reason? I could not carry enough film.

God reason! I just bought an R-D1 for mostly the same reason. I simply shoot too much and can't keep up with the scanning. And the cost of buying film and having it developed is increasingly becoming a drain on my finances.

I hope I have the R-D1 before the end of the month when I have a family reunion in the Ardennes in Belgium (anyone living in Tilff?)....

Roger,
Your latest article in Shutterbug struck a chord with me. As a "young" man, I took a long m'cycle trip from Oklahoma to Nova Scotia. I packed the Fujica ST701, sorry no RF story, in the tank back on top of the clothes. It survived and I enjoy the pics today. Vibration on cycles is a problem, so as the article stresses pack your photo equipment wisely.
Great article BTW!

Easy, the Nikon F2 with the 35/2 !

...

Ahh, that was the answer for the other forum ! :bang:

It will probably be the Canon P with the Canon 35/2.8 and Tri-X, less picky than Neopan with tank reels 😀

Hmmmmm, for me that's an easy question, as I'm on the opposite side of the world to home now and only had limited space.....so I brought a small LowePro shoulder bag that has my M6 TTL with the 35 'cron, 90 macro elmar, spare batteries, and 3 rolls of film. Makes a small, neat, and very usable package.

One camera only = Hexar AF
Due to lack of a correct category for this camera, I think of it as a rangefinder... 🙂
Reason: great 35/2 lens, really good (though quirky) auto-everything functions (the program mode as implemented on the Hexar is A Really Good Idea). Flashmatic. ´Manual overrides for everything. Spotmeter (on manual only). Very solid. Very unobtrusive (mine is black). The silent mode makes even a Leica M sound loud. Don't forget a spare battery, of course.

Alternatively, if it needs to be mechanical: M3 + 50/1.4 + 21/4 Voigtländer + lightmeter. Only the 50/1.4 if it needs to be one lens only.
Before you ask: why no 35? Easy: my 35 is permanently fixed to my Hexar AF... 🙄

Edit: add film rolls - Kodachrome 64 + Ilford Delta 400

since i only have two rangefinders, and one of them stinks, I would take my GSN. If i were a rich man (na na na na na na na...god I hate myself for referencing that terrible song) I might buy a M6 with a 35 lux, a 50 nok and a longer lens i haven't decided on yet.

I've never shot B&W traveling, only fuji slides, so maybe i'd take a mix of Delta 100, Tri-x, and some provia...shooting in colour while travelling has just been ingrained in me, though i am tying to get my monochromatic eye back.

edit: maybe i'd buy a mf rf...damn hard question.

😱 OK, ok, then I'll be careful. 🙂 Thanks for the advice 😀

Just curious, where on the map are you located in Mongolia? That part of the world is like "the moon" to me. Any discount flights to the local B&B's?

Well, there really is only one place in Mongolia and that's the capital Ulaanbaatar. There are more towns, villages and settlements but those have very little of interest for the average tourist. The country itself is a marvel of nature, though, ranging from the Gobi in the south to the steppes in the middle to the forests in the north and from the mountains in the west to the vast steppes in the east. Half an hour driving out of UB and there's very little that will remind you of civilization. 🙂

The cheapest flights are probably with Aeroflot. From Holland a two-way ticket (with a stop-over in Moscow) costs about 610 euro, including taxes.

Drop me a line if you're interested in going to Mongolia. I might be able to arrange a few things like holiday residence and a tour....

Bessa R, 35mm Color Skopar, Fuji Astia 100F, GE DW-86 meter (just in case) all in the Kata sling.

Back about 1972 I bought a new Soligor 135mm f/3.5 lens with a T-4 mount for my Exakta. I took it to Germany with me when I went there for a 60 day TDY. We flew on C-130's and I had the lens in my leather camera bag along with my other equipment. The lens worked fine while I was in Germany but on the flight back it came apart internally. I've always blamed it on the vibrations of the C-130 in flight. Since that time I've been careful to cushion or isolate my equipment from vibrations of any kind. I ended up throwing the Soligor away.

Let me think about that.............. interesting....... will take some planning.......... and some savings.......... sounds better than a cruise boat........ we can discuss offline. Regards. 🙂

No choice for me: I only have one RF, and it's a fixed lens not that it's a bad choice, regardless: Olympus XA - the perfect little travel rf.

Still, given the choice, I'd take the Canon P or VI that I'll one day own, with three lenses...

Cheers,
Steve
