just ordered from aki

If it as hard as some of the FSU ones, you will need blades. Better count your fingers and do it while there isn't a long queue at the emergency department!

I can see the recent sale of my purple M3 had influence. It is indeed purple and not red (blood or otherwise). It is embossed, dyed cowhide not real snakeskin-though it looks very real. He does sell real snakeskin but they are EXPENSIVE. And while the photos are fairly accurate in terms of how the color looks the camera is not nearly as foofy as one might think with this color. It's not bright or pink for example. I received many comments when using it, mostly in the ilk of "how beautiful!" or "Cool!" and even though I live in San Francisco not one comment came from a gay man (as far as I could ascertain anyway) and did use it in the Castro one day. I loved it and would have kept it but I use my MP much more and other camera purchases necessitated the sale to raise needed funds (a Rollei SL66 set-up).

Joe, for removal, wear safety glasses. If you think your Summicron blades flew high, wait to see dry vulcanite 😉 😉

Btw, I love the touch of the Ms vulcanite, mine has a tiny bit and another bigger piece missing but I'm planning on covering the holes. The one on the back door though is really messed up and could be a good idea to replace...

I think CRR Luton can revulcanize ?¿ your Leica while it's in service there.

Joe,
The vulcanite removal process isn't that hard, just a little time consuming and a bit frustrating, because some spots appear to be spot welded to the camera and just won't come off! Since that little corner is missing some vulcanite, its really easy to get started.

I'll have my dark brown lizard emboss covering for the M2 next week. I can't wait!

Actually, there's some website around with a very detailed description of the process. It needs a bit care on the more recessed zones (around ST, ie), and a sharp strong blade could be definitely useful.

Either I need to calibrate my monitor again, or I have a different concept of purple. You sure that's not Burgundy? OK, perhaps splitting hairs.

Speaking of, I hope you take care and do it sloooowly. The M3 brass is rather "soft" (it can scratch easily), if that makes any sense. I've never taken any vulcanite off any camera, but I've seen Leicas with chipped-off vulcanite, and it looks like one tough mutter.

I've also seen some pretty bad jobs (nasty thick yellowish glue could be seen). I hope you don't discover any unpleasant surprises under that vulcanite.

Good luck, Joe...and I mean that from the bottom of my experimenting, Canon P-using heart. I may be the crazy one next. I'm going cameraleather.com, though...that red leather they have is *way* too pretty not to be my signature style.

i just ordered a purple snakeskin cover for my m3.

it needs to be special cut for the ds.

i already have a new black cover for back up, in case i hate the purple in person.

Don't do it! It takes 20-40 years for them to develop Hanson's disease (bits fall off) and it adds character*.

* On the other hand, a purple camera has character as well.

this goes against my normal way of doing things.

a story...my buddy and his wife pull up to the local watering hole that we meet at each friday. they park behind my car. the wife says, 'is that joe's car?' and the husband says 'looks just like it but it has that 'zoom-zoom' sticker on the back, can't be joe's car'

they were both totally shocked that is was my car and that i had put a sticker on it.
i never would have done such a thing before.

but i'm tired of not doing.
just like the lens, i never would have tried to take apart/clean a lens before.
it's only a few bucks and it needed to be cleaned anyway so it's not really gonna cost me much more to have it cleaned and reasembled.

live a little!

By all means...

By all means...

Hello:

By all means get the snakeskin. I've been attempting humour on the disturbing tendency to flake of vulcanite. My IIIb is a candidate for new covering so perhaps purple snake is a future option for me.

best to you
Frank

It was an M3, double stroke, purple people eater...

How much Vulcanite is missing? Not much, patch it.

Then look for a really ugly back-up body with lots of missing Vulcanite to use the kit on...

Who wears short-shorts?
