Just saying hello

Just thought I'd say hello after just signing up. I found this site while searching for info on rangefinder cameras after accidently buying a Hi-Matic 7s on Ebay.

I was cruising Ebay during lunch just before Christmas and ran across an auction for a Hi-Matic 7 with 5 minutes to go and only a single bid of $9.99. I figured, what the hay, and put in a bid of $12.50. Short story, I won the auction for $12.50. When the camera arrived it turned out to be a pristine Hi-Matic 7s in the original leather case. Only on small dent on the top right corner. Now how do I tell my wife I bought another camera. After telling her it only cost $12.50 she was fine.

My first camera was a Voigtlander Vitessa L which my father bought new when we lived in Germany in 1954. I sold it 7 - 8 years ago because I was stupid. Go ahead and kick me now!

My present cameras, beside the 7s are: Nikon N90s with 20mm thru 400mm lenses, which rarely gets used these days; Bronica SQ-a with 40, 50, 80, 150, 250mm lenses, which is my primary camera; a barely used Konica AutoReflex A, which my father-in- law gave me, with 28, 40, 52, 135mm Hexanon lenses (boy are the Hexanons sharp); and a Nikon N-60, which is my wife's point-and-shoot. Seems like I am regressing when it comes to photography. I've even started to use Rodinal as my film developer.

My primary interest is black and white. I'm thinking of just using Tri-X in the Hi-Matic to try and stay retro.

Again, Just saying HI.

Ebay is wonderfully evil place r-brian. Can you think of a more successful e-business? Welcome to the gang.

Welcome, r-brian-- eBay is seductive in that way, isn't it? :)

Hmmm... it appears this Hi-Matic is now your only RF camera, right? That could change, if you're not careful! And the denizens of this forum will be no help in saving you from that.

I paid $10 for an Argus C3 some years ago, for a multiple-exposure project I had in mind, but you surely got a better camera for the money. A well-liked Olympus 35RC is my only camera of the same general type as yours.

Looking forward to your participation!

You have found and commented on one of the best kept secrets in cameradom. Most people don't know how sharp the Hexanon line was. Especially in the US, but really, not everyone in the far east either. A koean friend of mine told me of his father who was a professional photographer in Korea. He used Konicas exclusively (for 35mm work) due to the sharp lenses. They also made a line of interchangable lens RF cameras too. You see them only rarely on ebay. I guess people who have then just don't want to let them go.

Welcome to our not so little anymore group. Sounds like you got your feet wet now with Ebay and rangefinders. Careful, it's addictive. Hope to read you again soon. Curt.

Thanks for the nice welcome. This forum seems small enough yet where it should be fun and friendly.

Yes, I only have the one rangefinder, unless you count a Kodak 828 Pony. But my almost 4 year old daughter has that and runs around 'taking pictures'.

Now if only I could find a Konica RF for $12.50 on Ebay, wait, I might even go as high as $15.00.

Wow, an 828 Pony! I haven't seen one of those since about 1966. While I had the opportunity, I never did use one, and now I'm wondering if it takes square or rectangular pics. Have you used it recently? Did you know film is again/still available?

Brian, once you start with your first RF there's no way back! You've discovered now Minoltas, then Konicas, but there are also wonderful Canons, Olympus, Ricohs and then of course all that addictive former Soviet Union rangefinders...

Welcome to the forum :D

The last roll of film that was shoot with the 828 Pony was in 1970. My mother let me take it to college my freshman year.
I know film is now available but where would you get it developed. And is shoots rectanglar pictures.
