A few weeks ago I decided on the spur of the moment to hop a train into the city to do some street photography. My girlfriend dropped me at the station on her way to work, and I arrived with the rush hours crowds. Immediately onto the subway to lower Manhattan, I worked my way via a circuitous route back to Grand Central, walking fast and shooting a lot. I was on a train back north before 3pm, with five newly-exposed rolls of HP5+ in my back. My equipment for the day was the Leica IIIa with the Canon 50/3.5 collapsible screwed to the front and the lovely little SBOOI viewfinder on top. These are a few of the better shots. Enjoy.

A good eye for sure, excellent tones as well. I specially like the first shot and the last one, just my taste. The hand in the last shot is a small detail which adds something mysterious...wow, great!

I like image quality which was achieved with nice combo, which includes photographer first.

There are few decent images there.
The white frames bother me, for some reasons. I think they distract the attention- being on a black or gray background here.

Thanks, folks. I've shot a lot of these locations before, so it's always a challenge to avoid just taking the same photos over and over. I experimented with a few things this time, and some of them worked out (and some didn't, but you don't get to see those ;) ).

I liked all these shots but fond of the last photo. Shows a bit of the old city & why I love looking at older photographs of NY.

I'm really growing to love these old screwmounts. Your exposure is very nice. Do you meter or are you just so use to the scene that you know your exposure settings? That's something I want to focus more on learning.

Robert, I was very happy you noticed the hand in that shot - I thought it added something as well. Quite a few hands in that one, actually.

GB, my practice when shooting in the street is to meter sun and shadow when I set out so I have a baseline, and then to just adjust by instinct on the fly. It's not perfect, but it gets me usable exposures most of the time. It helps that my developer (Caffenol) is quite forgiving and a compensating developer besides.

Mikhail, the frames are a personal preference. I know they aren't to everyone's taste, but I prefer images to be presented this way.

Excellent photos, processing and scanning. I especially admire how you have composed so well with the SBOOI. I tried one and loved the 1:1 size but couldn't get what was on film to agree with what was in the viewfinder.
