Just picked up a pristine 75mm 1.9 Kern Paillard Switar at a flea market for 10 bucks. Has anybody used this C mount lens on the NEX 3/5? Is it worth for me to get the adaptor? Vignetting issues? And why is this lens so expensive on the Bay? Thank you so much for your rteplies.

You had a bargain. Brilliant lens. I paid....... bugger I ain't gonna admit it!

C mounts are movie lenses, ie smaller frames/format. Possible vignetting.

See example in photo posted for vignetting. Longer focus distance will show more if format is bigger than design format of the lens.

Kern made top grade lenses. Alpa used them and they were always rated well, but they were made for film cameras. Pallard was a movie camera manufacturer.

Thanks Ronald. Yes, I am aware that the apsc format on the Sony nex5 is larger than the cine lens design format. I am curious to know the degree of vignetting- is it too pronounced or is it manageable with minor cropping. A cinematography prof has told me that design demands are greater on cine lenses than still camera lenses since the images obtained from them are intended to be shown on a big screen-many thousands of times bigger than your 8x10 print-hence the quality. True?

Not C-Mount, but I have several large format Kern Apo Process Lenses. They were offered by Sinar, for their Norma Cameras, back in the '60s. They are quite rare, collectable, and pricey. I have the 210mm Kern, and the 300mm Kern. Both are in the original Sinar Norma Catalog/Price list. Both great lenses to use.

Paillard distributed Sinar, Alpa, Bolex etc at the time.

The adapter is less than 20USD.

What are you waiting for?

Please post your results 🙂

I will soon as I get the adaptor. I since have picked up a few lenses for my NEX5 and hopefully the NEX7 from the same flea/antique market in Toronto:

ANGENIEUX 20-80 2.5 in pristine condition - $25.00
CANON FD 20MM 2.8 - $40.00
KONICA 85MM 1.8 - $30.00
KONICA 135MM 2.5 - $30.00
KONICA. 24mm 2.8 - $30.00

And for a mere $219.00 plus tax , the new NIKON 50MM 1.8 G which kicked the butt of my 50MM 1.4 ZEISS PLANAR when used on the NEX7.
