Just heard this on NPR (All Things Considered) and thought I'd pass it along. He sounds like a real cool guy who is very centered. In his photos, it seems like the subject is, in fact, the photographer; or more precicely, the reflection of the photographer in his subjects.
It seems a case where the background information is essential to the impact of the photos. I'm not sure that they stand alone, although, I don't believe that to be a negative aspect.

Often, when people see someone who looks different or strange, they stare. Maybe they do it out of the corner of their eye, maybe they gawk, and maybe they get nervous and immediately avert their gaze. People stare, trying to figure out how the object came to be that way.
