So, you bumble along and are happy with the way your photos look and your workflow suits most of the time. What last happened in your photographic life to give you a metaphorical kick up the a®$€ ? For my 60th birthday my other half gave me a new PC. Great I said, but how do I use my existing scanner and software with this wonderful gift ? First off, I used Silverfast on an ancient XP machine. I am the sort of luddite that saw no reason for change. In fact I was downright scared in case I lost the look and feel of my photos. So I decided to drag myself bang up to date with Silverfast on my Windows 10 machine. Well it was like being dropped in a foreign city with no street map and not a clue what was going on. Both the computer and Silverfast have changed beyond recognition. I am now (2 days later) in a position where I can scan and save images that look like mine and also have the backup of GIMP to do any post processing that may be nescessary. I am going to sit myself down with some well known control negatives and do my due dilligence and get acquainted with my new setup. On reflection, it was time for an update and so far the results look good. My conclusion is that change can be a good thing, if only to keep ups motivated and moving forward.

Without change one stagnates...
so Yes, Change is Good ~

Glad to hear John, it makes You happy !

It's sort of like chucking out the darkroom contents and starting all over with different chemicals and paper. I switched recently from PS Elements to Affinity, and there definitely is a learning curve to deal with.

I wanted to try RAWtherapee so I downloaded it about 5 years ago and have updated it regularly. It is too much for me, I know it is for RAW files, but I wanted to use it for some color negative work. I'm just not getting a workflow conquered.

Hi John. I have no experience of RAW so I'm sticking with Jpegs for now. I have used the little Mju/Stylus infinity as a known quantity. Generally the negs are well exposed and scan well enough.

I’d rather do much less but via darkroom print.
Scanning dr print is not big deal. Editing its scan for screen presentation via old LR is easy.

You are right; a kick in the pants is sometimes needful to help us move forward a little bit. I upgraded my DXO and Nik Collection to the latest versions thanks to a good bundle deal they offered me in the "my software" area of their site, so I'm telling myself it's time to get out of the habit of just using LR6 for everything and try to get the most out of much newer software!
