I've just finished the rebuild of a 1974 Kiev 4A. The final job was replacing the leatherette; the original material had gone hard and brittle and curly. I made a template of the covering, and I have attached it to this post as a PNG file. Printed at 300dpi it will be exactly to size.

At first I tried reversing the image and printing it on the back of the leatherette, but as I suspected, black lines one pixel wide printed on a near-black woven backing turned out not to to show up too well! Plan B was to print the image right way round on a sheet of paper, cut the templates a little oversize, stick them to the face of the leatherette with small tabs of masking-tape, and cut with a craft knife along the template lines through the leatherette. This produced a very accurate result.

This camera was the late type 4A, without the 'bump' alongside the front cover, and with the angled sides to the cover. I suspect the template might work with the earlier version with minor modifications. It should also work on the late type Kiev 4, and probably the 4M and 4AM, to judge from from photos.

Steve.

great job! my kiev '61 has got a nice covering so no need for it but who knows - the next one is surely on the horizon!

post a pic when it is finished.
cheers!

Can't say I have need of this, since mine is sticking (tolerably) well but it's nice of you to go to the trouble of doing this - great example of what makes RFF such a good place!
