Kiev 4a double exposure

Hi

I just got some photos back from my Kiev 4a and I have had about 5-7 double exposures aorund the middle of the roll, I think. I am quite surprised by this and rather dismayed. I just got a cla on it about 6 weeks ago and have had a roll though it since then. Are there any known problems in this area, could this be a one off and is there anything I can do to prevent this in future. I thought the Kiev winder had a mechanism which protected one from double exposures.

Are the sprocket holes on the negatives fine?

Additionally there seems to be what looks like a light leak in some of the pictures I take. I hvae attached a picture as an example. (though not agreat one, I admit..)
Notice what looks like flare at a third of the way from the left hand side at the bottom. FYI I have only noticed this since I got a couple of new lenses, but have only got it with b/w.

Any ideas?

I had a similar problem with my 4A. I traced it back to the spool which was starting to slip and replaced it with one that fits more snuggly and wasn't as worn. I've been checking to make sure that the rewind knob moves when I wind-on.

In a somewhat different vein, if one wants INTENTIONAL double exposures, will the old trick of holding the rewind button work on Kievs?

Most likely holding the rewind button will tear your film. Kievs have the sprocket advance cogs actuated by the shutter/film advance limb.

A combo of spool and cassette will solve the problem. The prongs for taking the take-up spool is not strong to take the spool alone. You need to block the gap between the casting of the film gate and casting of the main body with some electric tape. You must have heard some noise during winding. That meant the teeth of the gear were not engaged.

Sorry for the stupid question, but where would I get "a combo of spool and cassette" . How does this differ from a new spool?

I think it means that you use another cassete in place of take-up spool.

That's what I usually do, one cassete with film winding onto another. Currently I use empty Fomapan cassetes as they're easier to open/reuse, but hope to pick the original Kiev swivel cassetes this weekend for this purpose.

Check sovdpia or alex-photo for kiev original cassette or spool (they consider cassette as spool, you need type kiev spool or cassette to search). Sovdpia offered a good deal if you buy more (original). Alex has cheap versions but it works. I'm very committed in kiev RF and bought 20+ cassettes. The original cassettes are of very high quality.

OK, I found only one Kiev cassette, nice condition in the original Kiev-labelled container. I must admit that the film winds really smoothly now, better than with either a take-up spool or standard 35mm cartridge. Even changing the speed feels easier for some reason, maybe because the axis has no tilting forces applied this way.

The cassette turn-opens inside when the back is locked, so it doesn't scratch film. I would definitely recommend it to Kiev users.
