Kiev 4A frustrating banding on negs

I have seen it once

I have seen it once

I have seen it once on the slide above (The colored stripes to the left are from the scanner) there is also the darkened sky.
What i notice is that it appeared in this shot, directly against the sunset, only.
I think this shot was made with the jupiter 12 lens and my jupiter 12 has no scratches or dents in the glass itself, but the paint on the edge of the rear element is in a poor condition. I suggest maybe this could be the light-leak ?

I don't know the answer to the problem but this started to happen to my Kiev before the shutters completely seized and died.

Heavily misexposed, in any case - but it is hard to tell which way in a print, as the printer will compensate the exposure either way towards the average.

Are the negatives extremely dense/fogged, or very thin? If the former, it seems to be a light leakage issue (presumably vertically on either spool side, affecting the film in transport). If the latter, the shutter blinds are effectively stuck close and what limited exposure you get is from the leakage through the seam formed by the blinds' imperfections.

Thanks Sevo - the first few shots on the roll were fine. It's hard to tell what happened - after opening the back of the camera the second shutter would lag heavily at low speeds - and after a while it just seized the camera. Not worth repairing unfortunately. The lens of course, is still good. I'll get another body from Oleg at some stage.

I think that there is light getting in between the shutter slats--forget a CLA, buy another body from someone like Oleg at OK Cameras-he knows Kievs back to front. Happy hunting without the stress!

Your Kiev died during its first roll!! I can believe it. My Kiev 4m arrived and did not work at all.Apparently assembled incorrectly but Oleg put it together correctly snd it is my major user now. Good Luck in the future.

Yes. I bought it from one of the major Ukranian traders on ePay. When it arrived it was working fine, I sat there for ages with the back off trying different speeds etc, firing it off dozens of times. The trader, to be fair, did offer me a refund if I posted it back (far too expensive), or a partial refund if I didn't. I was going to buy another from him in part exchange, but the others he had looked just as bad. So I'm going to leave it. I'm going to get another Kiev 4 body from Oleg soon.

Hi,

There's the answer: send it to Oleg.

My money's on the camera being "repaired" by someone at home and then put back wrongly. Kiev's are (?simplified) versions of the Contax design and that was noticeable for complexity. So hardly the best one to learn camera repairing on.

A 'tested' Kiev 4 body from Oleg is actually cheaper ($46-$50) than his CLA cost for working on your own ($56). Plus there is the cost of sending it to him - (about US$44 from Australia).

Thanks for that info: it was a shock as postage to Oleg is about USD 17 for me.

Where can one contact Oleg?

thanks

P.S. just noticed: is this it? http://www.okvintagecamera.com/index.html

Hi,

Yes, that's the man.

You'd best be warned that the post to Russia takes forever and a day. But in the reverse direction is fast. Don't let that put you off; a camera that he's seen to is a joy forever, etc, etc.

Regards, David

PS Does anyone know the Russian for "Damaged Camera for Repair" as I'd like to put it on the Customs form.
