I just picked up a second Kiev today. This one is a 4a and was bought knowing it had a shutter issue.

All shutter speeds look and sound good but after cocking the shutter if I change speeds to a higher speed the shutter opens. It does close after firing it and works fine till I change to a higher speed. It does not do this when changing to a slower speed though.

I know it will need service but is this an easy fix??

I read this trick somewhere on the net, ages ago. Not saying it'll work for you but it's worth a try (I had this issue and it did work, however).

Take the back off. Cock and fire the shutter on a slow speed. Re-cock, still set to a slow speed. Change to a higher speed, so the curtains start to separate. CAREFULLY and GENTLY, close the open blind upwards, with a fingernail against the catch. Don't force it! Now try the whole thing again to see if it works.

Don't ask me how it works (if, indeed, it does!). It worked for me on my Dad's old Kiev 4 and it hasn't misbehaved since.

After taking a closer look I found the curtain locking lever was not full seating so I carefully adjusted it. It now works fine.

With the shutter set to "B" I opened the shutter to inspect the ribbons. What I could see looked good so I'll give it a trial run with film..
