Kiev repairs

I'm safe, then. But twenty years for a Contax shutter?
The Contax II shutter was designed to have the shutter ribbons replaced every twenty years as a regular maintenance item. That was for the original silk ribbons I don't know whether the Kiev nylon ribbons last as long or longer.

Hi Daniel,

I think we are in this together as my Kiev also needs servicing. I live in Vienna. A Guy who took over his fathers workshop and has done one repair for me said that he charges 60€ for Kiev repairs. The work he did on my Nikon was good but...later I realized that he forgot to retighten the screw of the wind lever luckiliy I did not loose it.
But I would be ready to give him a try.
I tried to fix as much as possible myself. I also saaw a britsh guy who offerd Kiev repairs.
I had a place in Bulgaria but they seem to be out of business. Should I forward you the adress?

Hi Daniel,

No Oleg = No God.

Therefore, why not exchanging the whole shutter for another one while selecting the best parts of both ?

Cheers,
Ruben

Hi Daniel,
To my humble understanding picture sharpness is due to good lens and harmony between rangefinder and film plane. I do not understand how disecting the shutter may affect it.

As for good exposure, the sutter curtains should be accuratelly tensioned, and this is no big deal too.

Yet I understand you feel sentimentally sensible to this camera. But on the other hand I use to do myself what I do not trust others will do for me.

Cheers,
Ruben

Spider67: I had a Kiev repaired here in Bratislava for 15€. The repairman is not a Henry S., and it took him 9 months to find time to do it, but finally he did it and the shutter seems to be working fine.

I've had good experience with Yuri with a lens, but don't actually know who did the work. I just know the lens I sent him was as you folks say, "knackered" lol, and when it was returned, it was golden. I'm thinking if he says they can do repairs on a Kiev, it's no hollow boast. Regardless, there's no reason to send a camera to the US if you can find someone closer to do the repair.

Nice pics BTW. (showoff :/ )

Hi,

I think I understand comrade Ruben.😛 To replace a shutter from a parts camera is many times easier than to fix a shutter tape, and that is if you can find the right ribbon. I believe Ruben will show you how easy it is in his Kiev repair project.😀

I find that the original silk ribbon could last much longer than 20 years. My 1951,1952 Kiev II still has an intact ribbon after nearly 60 years.

Just my 0.02 RMB.

I work on my car, my bikes, and my computers. But I've drawn the line at my cameras. Other people might look at it differently, and to them I say, "good for you." We each know our limits and our strengths. I don't have the tools for that kind of work, even if I might have the basic skills.

I believe that Steve has stopped repairing Kievs and is doing solely Contax cameras now, but you could check with him, he may have changed his mind.
I have one 4A that he did and it is sweet as a nut.

A Zorki or Leica has a much simpler shutter than a Kiev II, but they are not necessariely much easier to fix. One gets a headache the 1st time he opens a Contax or Kiev. It seems Zeiss engineers mis-applied their precision professional equipment talent on a consumer product.:bang:

It might also be worth trying Mike Elek or Nicolas Douez, both of whom I think have repaired or CLA'd Contaxes?
