Some of you may know of Peter Hennig’s excellent article, “ Kiev Rangefinders by Peter Hennig” on Stephen Gandy’s Camera Quest site. Some of you may also know that Peter’s article has mysteriously gone missing from Camera Quest.

Peter Hennig’s article has resurfaced on the Kiev Survival Site with some new updates to it as new information has come to light. We are very pleased to have Peter’s Kiev Rangefinder article as a welcomed addition to the Kiev Survival Site. You can find this excellent historical account in a new section called Guest Articles. http://www3.telus.net/public/rpnchbck/guest articles.html

This new section is for you out there that have some golden nuggets of information about Kiev’s but have nowhere to have it posted. Sure you can post it here on the RFF but it soon gets lost amidst the many messages and threads.

As it says on the KSS, “Got some interesting information regarding Kiev's, historical or helpful procedures on repairs? Write it up for inclusion on this site, or drop me a line with the images and some text and I'll complete it up. If it's at all interesting and has some usefulness to the community, here's a good place to post it.”

Cheers,

Russ Pinchbeck

Thank you, Russ.
I was having a disaster week with my camera gear, my Spotmatics and Rolleiflex all got damaged due to carelessness and rendered unoperable, only my Kievs were working because of the excellent instructions on your site.
Now I wish there were a Spotmatic and Rolleiflex survival site.

Not quite a Spotmatic survival site but I did document the removal of the top of my K1000 last night. I dropped a small screw inside my K1000 and it didn't come out when I inverted the camera. I'm hoping it is somewhere amongst the pentaprism assembly. If need be I can post those images in the Other Stuff area.

Your site continues to go forwards !

That would be fantastic, even though I know how to correct most things in the spotmatic, I think there will able a lot of people out there who would find it useful.

You site was good in the way that it also document the mechanics, for example the animated graphic for the kiev rangefinder. I am sure that would be an excellent addition.

P.S. Do you know how to sync the gears when replacing the shutter roller and blinds? I am awaiting some shutter ribbons and when they arrive i shall be more than happy to submit an article about that when I figure out how to do it.

I had done a Word document ages ago that covers syncing the shutter gears. I should get this added to the KSS site as it is very useful. I must have missed adding this when I started to fill out the site.

If you are in a hurry for this you can PM me and I can send the original Word doc to you.

Yours is such a terrific site, Russ, and I must thank you for your personal help when I needed to disassemble a J8 a year or so ago. Much appreciated.

Thank you for this wonderful resource, Russ! I kind of remember having read it somewhere, but it was quite some time ago, when I wasn't into Kiev/Contax cameras at all. How could I ever don't like them ? 😀

Thanks for the offer for sending me the article. I think I had this already, I think it mentioned 7 gear teeth at 1/1250 sec and had 4 pictures of of the slow speed mechanism. I am not in a hurry, as I probably won't be able to schedule anymore repairs until autumn.

Yup, that's the article. You must have scored a copy from the BestStuff Russian Camera User forum. Maybe by autumn I'll have a real version of this on the site. Keep your eyes peeled.
