Kiev: Why did the Helios replace the Jupiter?

I like the quality of the Jupiter 8 on my Kiev. I have also used the Helios and never noted anything peculiar with the results.

Does anyone have info why it was replaced with the Kievs, but stillmade for the Zorkis?

What is the difference with the optical formula?

one is a Sonnar design (j8) , the other a Gauss design.

the H 103 was probably cheaper to make and gave nice colour rendition like its Zeiss Biotar cousin.

why it was only made for the Kiev is a mystery for such a late comer in the FSU lens world.
the answer could have been lost into Soviet bureaucracy of the late 1970s/early eighties.
it would have been a larger lens in LTM than the J-8 physically.

As far as I know Helios 103 is Planar formula, but might be wrong.

Yes, Sonnars are difficult to make. I'm guessing that even under the Soviet system, there were many advantages to going w/the easier/less costly to manufacture design that made the decision a no-brainer.

Brian may have done this. At one time, he was buying a few Helios lenses for Frankensteining, but he may have converted those into Nikon S. I have a I-61 Contax mount!

A Zeiss Planar is still a Gauss design, a double Gauss to be exact.
