kiev4 jupiter 9 woes

Hello!

I just received a Jupiter 9 for my Kiev 4 (the plaid one) and I can't seem to get it to mount.

I have previously successfully mounted a Jupiter 12 on my Kiev 4am, so I don't think I'm following the process the wrong way. Also, the Kiev 4 in question seems to work fine, so I'm guessing the J9 is at fault.

I know on LTM J9s, bad disassembly leads to focusing issues. Would a similar problem exist on a Contax mount J9 that could prevent it from mounting? I'm wondering if a lens could be altered so the part that matches the bayonet is off kilter from the part that matches the outside of the internal mount.

ok i'll give it a try.

1.) do you recommend varying one and holding the other constant?

2.) are the mounts known for being especially delicate? i'd hate to hurt a plaid kiev

The camera and the lens should be set to infinity when mounting a lens. You may need to disengage the infinity lock. The lens should disengage it, but often doesn't.

i think i need to clarify my comments.

i know that it should behave the way you're describing it, but it doesn't seem to. i can push the lens onto the camera, but once i've done this it won't turn to lock like it should. i can spin the focusing wheel on the lens and the small wheel on the camera will turn, stop, and then after a while turn some more, but when i get to the macro setting the lens will pop off.

Are you lining up the red dots? You should only use the small focusing wheel for 50mm lenses. It's not strong enough to use in focusing anything mounted on the outer bayonet. I wouldn't try to focus the lens at all unless it's properly mounted. The internal focusing helical is fairly delicate.

i think i'm doing a bad job describing the problem

i have been following the procedure that pixtu just posted exactly. but the lens does not lock when i turn it anti-clockwise.

it rattles in and out of the mount.


any ideas?

that was it!

i had to compare it to the 4am with the J12 in order to see where the little niche was... but it's working now.

now, time to go see if this camera still works after all the tugging it's had on it. and to see if the j9 is as great as promised.

ok, i wanted to shoot a roll with the lens before i posted anything else. that's been done, and the pictures look great. apparently even my very banged up example of this lens takes wonderful photos

one thing still troubles me.

the lens seems seated properly, and the tab has clicked like it should.

the small focus wheel turns along with the lens focus throughout its range, so it is turning the internal mount and thus the rangefinder

but the lens only turns normally from macro -> 10 meters. i can get it to turn from 10m -> infinity, but I have to really force it. the small focus wheel does turn as i do this, so it is turning the kiev's internal mount.

when the lens is off the camera, it turns normally throughout its range. so i'm guessing the problem is in the mating... but i can't think what.

my only guess was that i was turning the internal mount past what i should be, but if that were the case i'd expect the camera to be busted as opposed to taking beautiful images.

hence my confusion

any ideas??

good question... i guess i have to shoot another roll and get back to you!

i'm honestly happy even if it only works with this jupiter 9... as long as it continues to work. it was one of those Kievs that you see on ebay with the cover falling off and a dead light meter for dirt cheap. if it can take beautiful pictures with a great lens then that's not too bad a fate for it

still, i was wondering if anyone had ever had this experience with a kiev mount lens before. this one looks like its had a long hard life, so maybe it has some bent parts or something
