Kievs versus Contax?

yeah, that's my problem.. I'm only moderately mechanically inclined.. there's a very good chance that any camera I take apart will end up worse than it started.. at best, it would probably work the same.. I'm really good at figuring out how something works... just not how to make it actually do what it's supposed to (sort of like women)

If you want to play safe, buy kieves from Oleg (okvintagecamera). I believe he still has several to sell. I bought 2 kiev 3 and 1 kiev 3a that worked out of the box (no adjustment was needed). He obviously fixed the cameras before he sold them.

I checked his site a couple hours ago and didn't see any kievs but I can look again.. there are several on eb*y that look promising, tho

Did you check the camera section and hit kiev tab? I think you should buy kiev3a body (rated as good, his rating is purely based on cosmetic condition even shutter/winding everything else is excellent) and kiev 4am or 4m if you are tired of loading film in a traditional way. He also have some new stocks. Forget about ebay if you want a good start.

The other place that is very good is Fedka http://www.fedka.com/catalog/ He will cost more but he's in the states, his customer service is amazing and he stands by his cameras.

I got my Kiev 4a and Iskra from him.
