Hello RFF, it's been a while!

A good few years ago I picked up a package deal of an X-pro 1 with a 35/1.4 and a 18/2. I've used the camera fairly extensively since, admittedly not as much as I've wanted. There was just something after the initial excitement inevitably sparked by new gear that made using it feel cumbersome somehow. A few years later I hardly ever bring the camera along, if I do it dutifully sits in it's bag, waiting. Judging.

Anyway. I miss shooting! I miss having something along with me all day that does a better job of passing the time than isolating myself with a pair of headphones. This nostalgia for my days of actively photographing has me considering.... Buying stuff! And, naturally, selling stuff. I've found recent windfall that will let me comfortably spend on an X100F. A camera that I kind of hope will bring me as close as somewhat reasonably priced digital will allow to the set up I've most enjoyed during the years - an M4-P with a 'fixed-by-finance' Summicron 35. Besides that I've a few other strictly technical expectations on the F:

• Significantly improved autofocus
• Better use with/without glasses* (I need those now)
• Lighter, smaller, easier to carry

What do with the X-pro and it's two lenses, though? Consider keeping the camera and the 50mm equivalent lens? Let the entire kit go and spend some of the money on a TCL-X100 and more importantly, travel? Or you know, just quit making excuses and apply some self discipline and make myself use the X-pro?

Any input here? Please, help me validate my impending purchasing decision! 😱

Take a few photography workshops on topics that pique your interest.

Find a mentor/coach, besides here, that could help you with your photography journey.

Never ending story between the simplicity of a Leica M and the advantages modern cameras can offer. Well known. There is no one-and-only solution.

For travel and going light and easy I have a Fuji F900EXR in a small bag with me.
Nearly everything goes, display works with every kind of glasses and it is smaller than a
pack of cigarettes.
Insurance to have panorama + tele options when a "big" cam is with me.

I have bought and sold more than 45,000 cameras over the years (small exaggeration). Not one of them made me a better photographer. Actually set me back as I needed to optimize settings all over again. Love the one you're with.

I don't keep still valuable digital cameras and lenses if I'm not using them. Sold my FF DSLR and its lens which were less and less in use.

Mr. Hexiplex, you will get no better advice than what this gentleman has provided you.

Most people upgrade from an X100 whatever, to an XPro whatever... you're already where you need to be so just pick a lens and go shoot something. Most people over think stuff and dream about the best situation; better to just get off your ass and go take some pictures. You'll feel better afterwards.

May I suggest something a bit different. I've shot both the X-Pro and the X100 camera. Though the X-Pro is a bit larger the experiences similar. It seem to me you're just swapping out the 35mm POV for another 35mm POV. So the quick solution in my mind - change POV. Get one of those nifty 27mm f/2.8 pancake lense. With the rest of the money do as the old proverb says, go put yourself in front of something interesting.

Keep the X-Pro 1 and try one more time to see if you can find harmony with it.

Sell it now. Keep the lenses. Start to save up for an X-Pro 2. The X-Pro 2 is to the X-Pro 1 as the X100F is to the X100.

I own the X-Pro 2 and X-100T. I once owned a X-Pro 1 and X-100.

While others very much enjoy using TCLs with there X-100 series cameras, I finally decided the extra size and weight were not for me.

Seems to me I like the idea of doing pretty much everything more than than the act itself - until I expend time and effort into that act. That, I used to be, invested. Purely by virtue of repetition, by shooting pretty much all of the time. It’s a deliciously subtle feedback loop of dopamine that I want back in on. Or, at the very least, try for. The idea to revise gear is an unfortunate, but surely not inevitable byproduct of that. Rolling over though, even in relatively inconsequential matters like this one, hasn’t yet proven to be a recipe for anything positive. Enough amateur psychology for now. Though I do appreciate your very preliminary analysis 😉

Thanks for your input, folks! I’ve decided on temporarily reclaiming the GRD III I gave to my dad to see how I get on with a small(er) form factor digital. Being able to tote something around easily isn’t the the same as saying I’ll use that something. The proof of my future regards the X100F will be in the Ricoh-shaped pudding.

A good few years ago I picked up a package deal of an X-pro 1 with a 35/1.4 and a 18/2.

I started with the X100S and a X-E1 w/35mm f1.4. Decided that I preferred the X100S and sold the X-E1 & 35mm and picked up the TCL & WCL converter lenses. So right now I have essentially what you have - a 50mm equiv and 28 mm equiv. I thought about the X-Pro1 but did not want to mess with the diopter correction lenses for viewing. Also the X100S has the 3-stop ND filter that I use quite often.
It comes down to what you feel comfortable shooting with. For me, I wanted to reduce weight from the SLR/DSLR world I had lived in for 35 years. I am still getting used to the setup after leaving the newspaper industry and having everything from 18mm to 450mm equiv lenses. BUT I keep trying to focus on moving forward with new challenges.

Well, other than the faster AF, the leaf shutter, built in flash, more resolution, and the size/weight.

I have an X100 that I use very often. It often gets the job done without the need for the tons of other stuff I have. There is something very right about this camera and its viewfinder. I'd say, give it a try! 🙂

Just keep the X pro 1 and lenses. Gives a nice spread for focal lengths with the X100F. The Xpro1 is a very capable camera but is not worth much on the used market. Seems like you don't need to sell it, so use it every now and then.

Having fun with the camera so far! Still haven't used it as much as I'd like, the heat that's been ruling has limited most of my activities, but at least the camera's there with me every day.

The only nitpick I have about it so far is a fairly wobbly on/off switch. Not something that really bothers me in practice, but it's a question mark for the future.

For God's sake dump that old X-Pro 1 and pick up "the set up I've most enjoyed during the years - an M4-P with a 'fixed-by-finance' Summicron 35". As far as the X-100F: I simply fail to understand why you need a a digital with a fixed 35 (equivalent) to supplement a Leica with a 35. At least have a digital that takes different FLs - right?
