I recently bought this camera. Mostly, I used an M-3. The shutter speeds seem right by film testing, but it's loud. Is this a shutter brake issue, and if so, is this a problem? I am not a 'purist'. If it works, I'm fine with it. Any advise?

If the brake is not adjusted right, it will be louder. Adjusting it is not that hard, but as mentioned it won't be as quiet as an M.

Hmm, I've tested my IIIf against my M2 and as far as I can tell the sound of the shutter at all speeds is pretty much the same - at least I can't really hear that much of a difference....

I just got my camera back from Don Goldberg. It now quietly goes 'snick'. He also replaced the rangefinder beam splitter - amazing improvement. He's the go-to repair guy!

Don knows his stuff alright. And his turnaround time is better than most.

I suspect your loud shutter may have been caused by over-tightened shutter springs that people messed with instead of properly lubricating the mechanism.

Cheers,
Dez
