Kodak BW 400CN film question

It's very good

It's very good

I use it all the time in my M5. I have also usrd it in my FM2 and Canon Elan 7 and EOS 1-V. Sometimes I do adjust the contrast when I scan, like when using the FM2. But sometimes when using it with the M5 and 50 Summilux I like the way it looks-a lot like the circa 1950's look.

Same here. M5 & Canon EF so far.

My only concern so far has been the film's ability to render green foliage stark white. I have an otherwise perfect negative of a really nice scene. However, I had to crop off the top 1/3 because of the way overexposed grass. Maybe it was me. Maybe it was the strong afternoon sun. I reshot the scene this evening with XP2 and late evening, low contrast light. We'll see.

The film is fabulous indoors, stage or pool table lighting, f:1.4 lens wide open. Really nice!

So far, I have shot at 320. Some folks shoot at 200. Others at 400. All with good results. Go figure. 😀

I like it both for the quality of the scans and convenience of store developing.

Btw, has anyone tried Neopan 400CN? I wonder if it's pretty much the same as the Kodak BW400CN?

I was in my local camera shop today looking for some since I am a Fuji man but they were sold out. They will hold a few rolls for me when it comes in..

I haven't used it or even seen it. There has been a lot of talk here lately about C-41 B&W film. Several folks said they thought the Fuji product was relabeled Ilford XP2 Super. Is the Fuji Neopan 400CN available in the USA? I haven't seen it, but then it's hard to find good film inventories in stores period.

I used to get my film at film depot but most of the outlets have moved or closed so the closest is Dallas.
Locally I get it at Fort Worth Camera or Arlington Camera.
At the twice yearly camera show The Film Club sets up shop and sells at discount show prices.

I'm planning a trip to Houston in the near future to see my brother. Where is the best place to go??

When is the next camera show & where? I get to come up north (north of Tyler) every other weekend.

Best place in Houston for? Film? Fun????😀

I've only been in Houston since Aug. 29, 2005. I have only been paying attention to things photogrphic this year. Near as I can tell, there are only 2 real camera stores left. Houston Camera Exchange on Richmond east of Fountainview (phone number on their web page) and Houston Camera Co-op (their address just flew out of my brain-GOOGLE knows). I would call ahead and ask if they have the film you want.

Good luck!

I've used both BW400CN and XP2, and gotten good results from both, but (1) I only let tthe lab process the film and hand it back to me, uncut – I handle everything down the line from there. Both films have come in handy for professional jobs I've done. But while I occasionally will use BW400CN in a pinch, XP2 has become my chromogenic mainstay (along with conventional emulsions like HP5/Tri-X and FP4) for one practical reason: it alone allows me the option to print in the wet darkroom if ever I so choose, even though my post-shoot workflow is largely digital. BW400NC is definitely more of an ordeal on the wet-darkroom side, although some have said that it's more minilab-friendly in terms of more-neutral b/w printing (something not entirely borne out from the results of some RFf mambers).

Here's an example snapshot... Kodak B&W 400 C-41 process... Olympus XA4... Scanned from a 5x7 print. It's not my film of choice but it's OK for what it is.

I have tried both Ilford & Kodak C41 B&W films, but only D&Ped by labs. Trouble is they only print on colour paper, so no true blacks!

Our next show is this month. The 16th and 17th at the Grapevine Convention Center.

I've been to Houston Camera Exchange several years ago.
I'll look up Houston Camera Co-op. Hopefully I'll get a chance to check both of them out when I go..
Thanks
