Kodak Wratten Gel filters

Hi all,

just found a box of Kodak 75mmx 75mm Wratten Gel filters in my store room. Forgot I had them.

Do people still use these? I found quite a few that have never been opened...

I still occasionally use a couple with black and white - I even bought some new Tiffen and Lee gels a year or two ago to replace scratched/faded ones as glass in the same size would be even more expensive. But these are vivid blues and greens and a few odd light IR grades, probably not the filters in your box.

Back in film days and out of house scanning, a small increment colour correction filter kit was part of every studio. In the age of digital post-processing even film users have little use for these. Chances are that your box is such a kit - and you won't have much of a application for it unless you own a Colormeter and do slides for projection...

actually I went through the filters and have them from a no. 0 to a no. 106 and lots in between. I found a few around no. 87, the IR ones.

I haven't gone through them but also have several of the colour compensating filters and the printing filters.

I'd forgotten all about them.

Well, stick to them! As long as they are properly cared for (with the appropriate holder, handled in gloves, stored cool, dark and dry) they are optically superior to glass filters - they are the reference colours the glass filters try to emulate.
