I'm getting what you mean re. the photographers not wanting to be the average tourists, although being tourists nonetheless.
This might be the main source of a dilemma of some sort we always have to face when traveling (and preparing ourselves for travel).
Thus, sometimes (if not most of the times), taking one camera only (even with a fixed lens) and a large bunch of film works super. In any case, it works better than taking too much gear and not film enough.
When I went to Barcelona I took my Rollei 35 and lots of B&W film in my jacket pockets, and nothing else. And I had no regrets about some gear I had left at home once arrived on location. There is a trip to Amsterdam scheduled on next February ; I will probably buy myself the same policy...

I totally agree with the "traveling light" choice.
Trip to Lisbon : Konica SII, Koniflex. Fixed lenses, one sort of film in each camera. 😉
