Hiya Michael.
From now till Christmas, Singapore's Orchard Road is decked with lots of Xmas lighting, the whole stretch....definitely a night scene which you won't wanna miss.
Another good place to go for drinks and to let your hair down would be Clarke Quay. With a good tourist map, it's easy to get around as most of the city is linked up by rail.
In the day time, there is this Mandai Zoo, and the Jurong Bird Park. On another note, there is now an Integrated Resort system, one in Marina Bay, and another in Sentosa Island. I find the latter more interesting and more suited for tourists.
And yes, for RF and analog stuff, u gotta go to Chiif's and the shopping belt around that area. RFFers go weak at these places 🙂

I've been backpacking around Java for quite a while now and here is a list of interesting places in Indonesia:
Sumatera Island
- Lake Toba
- Samosir Island
- Medan City
Java Island
- Anak Krakatau Volcano
- Gunung (Indonesian for mountain) Gede
- Jogjakarta (rich Java cultural city surrounded with beautiful beaches and tourist spots such as Borobudur and Prambanan. Great cultural shows like Kecak dance, Ramayana Ballet, etc.)
- Karimunjawa Islands
- Mount Bromo (famous among tourists. You just have to see it with your own eyes but it recently erupted and I have no info on its status)
- Mount Ijen (Ijen Sulphur Mine. One of the places Nachtwey visited during his stay here.)
- Bali (For obvious reasons)
- Lombok (Beautiful untouched beaches. Stay in Senggigi and you'll be surrounded by beautiful sceneries everywhere you go. Fly from Bali around 35 USD. Cheaper and faster than fast boats)
- Flores Island
- Raja Ampat in Papua (Divers' Paradise. Absolutely stunning beaches.)
Cities like Jakarta, Bandung, or Surabaya are cool but if you wanna make your trip really memorable, stay out of the big cities and keep exploring. I suggest you to get the Lonely Planet book as it'll be a valuable guide. I'd recommend you to stay in Java for 1 and a half week or so and spend the rest in Bali and Lombok to just relax. If you're not a backpacker type of guy then I'd recommend to get everything sorted out because people here can be quite irresponsible especially in crowded tourist areas like Mount Bromo. I'm going to Borneo this December for some mission trip and I'll post some info here.

maybe not so obvious:
the butterfly garden in KL - but potentially not so interesting in this season?
i'd also recommend chinatown, and especially the so called "portuguese fish". be careful, it's spicy hot.

Edmelvins, thanks for that awesome and informative post....I remember seeing photos from the sulfer mines on mount Ijen.....that is something I am definitely interested in.....so much good info in your post I need some more time to sort things out.....

Ijen is definitely worth it. When I was there, I got on top of the mountain in the morning and there was still heavy mist surrounding the mountain then I decided to go down to the mining spot. It was raining pretty hard and the path was slippery and steep. I brought my 5D, 24-70, and 70-200 and it was hell. But when I got back up, the mist was gone and everything was stunning.
So I'd suggest to bring only the things that you really need. And also if you want to stay longer in the mining spot a gas mask would definitely help. You can buy one in ace hardware before you travel to the smaller cities. I wish I had brought a gas mask with me because everything was photogenic down there and I couldn't stay long because the sulfur gas was very strong and the wind was blowing toward me. Trust me, it was beautiful.

Raytoei has it mainly covered. Personally I advise my foreigner friends to avoid Newton Food Centre (seafood & local food) and Sim Lim Square (IT stuff) unless you have a local to accompany you.
It is rainy season here in Singapore but weather is hot & humid otherwise. So dress lightly in T-shirt and berms. Water from the tap is drinkable!
For Fujifilm stuff, you should go to Konota at Peninsular Shopping Centre ground level. For anything else (Kodak, Ilford, Agfa etc), go to Ruby Photo at Peninsular Plaza across the road. You can browse the used camera shops at Peninsular Plaza but I feel that RFF prices are way lower. You should visit Chiif's shop at for Voigtlander stuff.
You should try the River Cruise to tour the Singapore River. You should get around pretty easily using the MRT (subway).
Generally you should be able to cover most of the places in about 2 to 3 days.

a big thanks to everybody....I have so many places that I want to check out and i only have 21 days, arghhhh......I am looking forward to meeting up with fellow RFF members in your respective areas....
I plan on bringing all the film that I'll need ( I already bought it) but I am curious to know "How are film prices in Singapore?"......
I have a couple of days before I leave to do my homework and see where I want to go.....I am just happy that I get to hit the road for 3 weeks and see things and visit some places for the first time....I am also very excited that this is going to be a "fun photo trip" and I plan on taking a lot of photos and checking out some cool places...

tri-x, tmax-400 is around 5 - 6 bucks sgd or around 3-4 usd.

1. Petronas Towers at night - behind and in front from the Traders Hotel (there's an open-air pool at the top of the Trader's with a great view of the towers)
2. The orchid garden
3. The aviary (right across the street from the orchid garden)
4. The zoo is ok.
5. The bus tour! Stops at lots of places, including the above.
If you have a macro lens, be sure to take it. Tripod, too.

At Konota, Superia Xtra 400 is $5.20 each. Fuji Neopan 400 is $8.20.
All prices in Singapore dollars. The prices are reasonable but news had it that prices are slowly increasing. Nonetheless I don't think they are cut-throat prices and when you need it, you just got to buy it, right? You can ask for discount at Konota if you buy more. Hope this helps!

Tony, thanks for that tip on Traders hotel view...i'm going to check it out...I am going to bring my small leica table top tripod with me (it's the only one I own) with hopes of getting some cool night shots of the towers....
I'm not sure if I'll be connected to the Internet....I am bringing my iPhone with me (music/alarm clock/ light meter app) but I'm not sure if I'll puck up sim cards along the way or just use computers in cafes to communicate....either way, I'll be in touch with you guys and we can figure out when/where to meet up....

I *think* the ledge of the rail is wide enough for a small tripod, but it's tough to say. That was a couple of years ago and I don't remember too much. But you can see it in this photo taken from the Trader's Hotel.

i live in PNG and travel to Indonesia regularly and I have to give props to West Papua, Sulawesi, and Maluku as places to visit. Jayapura and surrounds are great and I loved Manado and Makassar and villages in Sulawesi. Check them out in your guide book....everywhere in Indonesia is fantastic, but some of the less visited provinces are well worth it.

I have a question for the guys in Singapore......I might be interested in getting an m2, how are the prices in general for used Leica m bodies.......I have a friend here visitng me from Moscow and he wants an m2 and I am thinking about sellig him mine and then picking one up next week in Singapore.......but i have no idea how the prices are for a used body......
