Large green dotted focus box on RX100

Sometimes the focus box on the RX100 becomes as wide as the whole screen .

As far as I can tell, this happens if the zoom is set past the optical range, but I'm not sure what's the point of the focus box changing size so dramatically.

The phenomenon occurs also in poor focusing conditions. Is it supposed to indicate that the camera was unable to lock focus? Judging by the LCD, focus is accurate even when the large green dotted box is displayed. Also, according to the manual, inability to lock focus is displayed via a blinking green focus dot, not a large dotted box.

Any insights?

From my experience, the "large" green dashed focus box appears only in the fully AUTO (intelligent) modes when shooting a large near-monochromatic plane OR moreso when there is little depth or contrast change in the plane (low light bookshelf). If the GREEN focus dot is SOLID -the camera is in focus.

So, if the green dot is solid and the doted box is displayed, the image is in focus, but the camera is trying to tell me what exactly? It seems strange that it would just be trying to tell me that the subject at focus plane is flat.

I'm still confused and even more confused by the fact that there's no mention of this "effect" in the manual and users are not talking about it. It can't be happening only to me.

In the examples I noted above, the AF is struggling against the plane, especially in low contrast or low light scenes. The box is telling you that there is NO particular point of focus, rather some "calculated" average. When that has been determined, the green dot will go solid. The result's success will be relative to what the camera averaged to ... try turning the AF assist light OFF.
