I recommend a fairly recent book Andre Kertesz by Michel Frizot and Annie-Laure Wanaverbecq. Editions Hazan/Editions du Jeu de Paume, Paris 2010. ISBN 978-2754104784. This is the catalog of the "Andre Kertesz" exhibit originally at the Jeu de Paume, Paris and to be shown at the Magyar Nemzeti Muzeum, Budapest from September 30-December 31, 2011. A major retrospective, the pictures and accompanying documentation are roughly organized around his time in Budapest, Paris and New York. Lots of notes, vintage prints and magazine reprints too. Beautifully printed by Grafiche Flaminia of Foligno, Italy; the reproductions are of the highest quality. A great first book on one of the giants of the field.

This book is published simultaneously by 7 publishers. Aperture states it's printed in quadratone, Thames & Hudson Ltd. in duotone according to their catalogue.
This is probably going to sound strange, but how does the book smell? I had in my hands czech edition published by Torst. It's printed on matte paper and the combination of paper and print colour smells awfully bad to me. Seems like I'm particularly sensitive to this smell, causing me headaches.... apart from this I can handle anything else

That clarifies, many thanks. I suspect the page count difference is from different introductory material ? Although Will Guy is credited by both T&H and Aperture.

I was unable to find information on the paper, but on Aperture's web site the description is thus: "lavishly printed in a unique quadratone mix by artisanal printer Gerhard Steidl" but regrettably no mention of paper either at Steidl or Aperture. So I asked my wife does this book smell? She thinks it does. I think it smells a bit but nothing spectacular. It was wrapped in shrink wrap and I fully expect the slight odor to dissipate with time...This is probably going to sound strange, but how does the book smell? I like this very much. I've personally experienced Steidlimbo, most notably with Bruce Davidson's Outside Inside.
There are no page numbers in my Gypsies, only plate numbers, but the Aperture web site lists the book as having 224 pages including 8 single-page gatefolds and 109 quadratone images.
The publication page states: "First Aperture edition, under license by Copyright S.A., Paris, France.

"A Day Off" by Tony Ray-Jones - managed to find a pristine 1st edition of the rare 1974 hardback very cheap last week.
Ray-Jones - who sadly died young in his early 30s - had a huge influence on contemporary British photography, and deserves to be better known. Martin Parr, Mark Power and Simon Roberts, among others, cite him as key to their development as photographers...
Unless you particularly want the original book, the Ray-Jones book currently in print is a better buy: far cheaper, and much higher print quality.

You're very welcome Nikos. Something I missed in my brief description is that there are some excellent reproductions of some of his color Polaroids at the end of the book. He took these pictures after his beloved wife Elizabeth died, and most of them are of small glass figurines shot on a windowsill. They are both inspirational and heartrending and very, very expressive. These little gems are so different from the rest of the book, a fitting coda to it and a testament to his brilliance in being able to articulate his deep sadness and love for his wife so imaginatively.

"Just My Type" by Simon Garfield, just released. It's a book about typography, not photography, but that's a visual medium, right? Not a font design manual, the book surveys type through history, the designers, and the underlying issues of font choice. Fascinating subject, and written to be both informative and entertaining.

I'm not a font nerd but I do enjoy the gamut of fonts in daily life. It would be an interesting read to be filled in on the thinking for designing a font and also when to choose one font over another.

Linda McCartney was interviewed and I believe it was Rolling Stone. She was asked about her recollections of a photograph regarding one of the Beatles and she gave great detail and back story. When she was done the interviewer was slightly astonished that she had even mentioned the speed and f stop she had used and he asked her in general terms "how on earth could you possibly recall the exact film, f stop and speed?"
Her reply was equally revealing.. "because that's how I shot all my photographs"
IIRC it was something like f8.0 at 1/125th ... I stand to be corrected on the details.

I love Greenfield-Sanders. I read about this project when he was working on it, I 'm glad the book is out, I'd love to look through it. I'll check the library.
