LCD Protector

I know it's not nearly as interesting as discussing UV filter vs no UV filter, but is anyone out there going to use a LCD protector for their M8?

If so, what type are you planning to use and where will you get it?

Thanks,

Stan

Stan-
Isn't it past your bedtime?
I'm not expecting an M8 anytime soon, but I think "tear offs" for motorcyclists' goggles might be a solution.
Is there a way to mount a better arrangement on the camera? Most digital cameras don't make this any too easy. I just live with the scratches on mine, but it cost considerably less than the Leica...

Funny you should mention that, I just ordered one from here:

I don't know if the protector is any good but I think it is a good idea to use a screen protector. Maybe I will remove it if enough people say their screens are not getting scratched with use....

Why would it be necessary? Aren't all the M8 owners leaving them in the box to preserve resale value? :p

Scraches

Scraches

Hi
I had m8 Canon covered with cheap pda cover cut down. You could definitly see less but it was good enought for the histogram. THe screen was to small to see much of the image.

On the RD1 i did not bother and i must say it hase gotten pretty scrached up and i wish now I had tryed to cover it.

Again I used it mainly for the histogram and to check my framing.

I think if you want to do any sort of image evaluation you will definitly loose by covering the screen in the beginning. After a while i would not be so sure if a new cover is worse than a scrached up screen.

Digi projectors all seem pretty bad. I did see a Canon one at a demo that seemed decent. Conditions were poor though and it cost 4 grand. That is $4000 US dollars to non USA citizens.

Others who cmpared digi to slide projectors pick the slide machines hands down.

I have an Oly SP 350 and use one that springs out with side bars that help block the sun during daylight. This camera has 2.5" screen so it makes it easy to check if I want to in bright light. Cost $15-$20 at B&H. I would recommend it I bought a M8, small price to pay.

Would you provide a link for this product at B&H? I searched, without any luck. This product sounds like it would be pretty neat, especially if it helps me see the screen in bright sunshine...

Bob has it. Delkin, easy to mount, pull the tape off and put over the viewfinder. It is one more step in use it because you have to open it, but I haven't scratch the lcd on the Oly, yet!

This is a great idea, but how do you get it sized to fit? These all seem to be made to fit specific DSLRS?

Hi Alan,
I've never used one, but they do have ones that fit the 2.5" screens. Other that shading the light, personally I think one might get in the way on the M8, since the ISO & EV adjust are in the menus. Where I think they shine is on those "no-viewfinder" P&Ss. I may be dreaming, but I thought I read somewhere that Leica was going to put a harder glass cover on the LCD.

PS, Talked again to Eric at Tamarkin today and he was going nuts putting stickies on the boxes to keep from getting mixed up. There is now a proper sticky on my box, but the lens and diopter will have to follow.

Bob:

I need to go back and look more carefully. I know they have engineered those fli ups for the big SLR's, but I agrew with you. I think it would get in the way on the leica to use a generic one.

Guys,
I use one on an Olympus SP-350. It has 2.5" screen and most of the settings are in the menus, but that doesn't seem to affect me from changing them easily. I haven't seen the back of a Leica M8, too rarified for me, but I doubt that the Delkin would interfere with any buttons. I like mine.

protector for LCD screen

I purchased a pack of large size hoodman clear protectors, called hoodskins, and trim to size using plain old scissors. The clear plastic has a mild adhesive but a trial pull off dioes not reveal any remaining adhesive on the screen, and an easy re-attachment. These come in a pack of 12. Model HSK-4 is plenty large enough to allow trimming.
