Leather strap vs Cloth strap... convenience of packing

I've had a Domke Gripper strap (1 inch wide) for quite a while on my Leica MP. I've always thought about moving up to a leather strap but I'm not sure if it is a practical idea.

You see, the domke gripper strap is made of cloth and packs and folds down very easily. I'm afraid that any leather strap will just take up a lot of room because it isn't foldable and may be a bit bulkier.

What has been your experience with packing a leather strap into a camera bag and its comfort in general? Are there any leather straps that are as supple and soft as cloth straps... yet still durable?

Most of my cameras have Domke straps, but I have a few with other types. So far, the only leather strap I have is a vintage Leica, attached to one of my M4 bodies. I haven't packed it for a trip, but I have stashed in in a Domke bag (see the pattern here? 🙂 ), and the leather strap just gets pushed wherever it goes and that's where it stays.

In short, get the strap and worry about these things when the moment comes.

BTW, I just never fold my straps.

I don't use straps anymore. Camera clips make grabbing for the body a lot easier and is easier on my back. The downside is you look slightly more "professional" than you usually want to...but to me the tradeoff is acceptable.

There is not any "move up" from a Domke gripper if you like neck straps.
Maybe a move sideways to something equally useful! 🙂

I've used grippers for some time.
They don't last forever. Eventually the rubber starts falling apart and makes a mess!
Pretty damn cheap compared to some options.
Easy enough to replace when it's time! 🙂

I use mostly A & A neck straps because I can wrap them around my camera and store those easily in a dry cabinet. (better to avoid with a leather strap)

I'd like the A&A silk cord neckstrap, but it's a bit pricey.

The Street Strap (http://www.streetstrap.com) is 95% the same thing and less than half the price. Never tangles, packs down tight, and is comfortable to wear around the wrist, on the neck, or bandolier style.

I've had good leather straps. While nice, they always have their drawbacks.
