Leaving a bit of film extending from canister

Hey people, just wondering if you might have some advice on rewinding a roll of film and getting it out with just a bit of film sticking out of the canister? Is there any way of checking you don't wind all the film back up? I'm using an m6. Thanks!

When you rewind, you can feel that the film lead has detached from the spool, right after that, give it a half turn on the crank and you should have the enough of the film sticking out of the canister.

Or get a leader retriever ... they're not that expensive.

There is a sudden peak in the force required when pulling the leader off the tulip.

And if you're in a quiet place you can hear a change in the sound of the film moving.

Aside from the rewinding I found keeping track of which film is (half)exposed and which is not with all the leads sticking out confusing. Despite marking the canisters I ended up with developing unused films and double exposing other rolls :-(

Off course this tells you more about me than about leaving the end out 🙂

Been there, done that. I now firmly crimp over the tip of the film to indicate it has come out after shooting in a camera.

I also crimp and fold the end tip of the film, when it is out of the take up spool you could hear something like a clicking noise

This is true of my standard Ms. With the M5 and my OMs the rewind is so efficient that I am scared there's no film at all and I find it harder to tell when the film releases from the take up spool.

Yep. Crimp the end. When it releases you can feel it.

That leaves us with changing film mid roll, one of the reasons I love MF=less confusing for me 🙄

Then again, they don't work that well. I have managed to successfully retrieve a film with mine. Once. But never again. Beginner's luck.

I've never bothered with a retriever ... I read the tip here about poking a piece of film in the canister opening after licking the emulsion side to moisten it. It works really well amazingly ... and you get to taste your favourite films! 😀

Hey Keith, could you explain this method a bit more? Sounds interesting

You get a shortish piece of film .... lick the emulsion side so it's tacky and insert it through the light trap with the dampened emulsion side facing out ... pushing it in as far as you can. Slowly rotate the spindle as if winding the film into the canister until you feel it grip then pull out the strip you inserted and around half the time it will pull the leader out with it!

It doesn't work every time and may require a few attempts to succeed but it's the only method I use now. 🙂

I do this with many rolls- leave a little out of the canister when I rewind it. I also carry a pair of mustache trimmers with me in my camera bag. I have one pocket that all the used film goes into and when I take a break, or at the end of the day, I'll clip the leadered ends so I don't have to do it in a dark-room or changing back, then wind it all into the canister for later developing.

Hold it to your ear and you can hear it release from the take up. Give one more turn.

I used to lick my film too; however, I soon realized that I might ingest some silver in the film so I just run it under the tap.
