Left or Right eye shooter?

I used to shoot exclusively with my left eye but it's now not as sharp as it was so I alternate. Oddly my left eye sees a bit cooler and my right eye a bit warmer.

So if you are a left eyed shooter which is the best camera to use?

I like my GSN and the OM-2 isn't too bad but my Nikon F80 was awful ... nose and fingers kept getting in the way.

The Mamiya Press/polaroid 600se and graflex speed graphic have their RFs and VFs on the right hand side.

A waist level finder would also help, so any TLR or SLR with one would work beautifully.

More seriously, I can use either eye but I prefer the left one, because I find it easier to shoot long exposures (the camera is more stable, being in contact with the nose and cheek).

I agree, its much more comfortable and natural to shoot hand held shots using the left eye with Fujica 690 cameras.

When you use a tripod it doesnt make much difference.

I naturally open my left eye and crush my nose with the camera 🙂

I'm right handed & Left eyed... (and goofy footed) However, if I'm shooting a range-finder - I will try to keep both eyes open - in which case it's easier to look through the viewfinder with my right eye... feels strange though and I often shift the left over to check my focus patch before snapping (if I have time).

Never really thought about it before...

So how do you "rangefinders are for right-eyed people only" folks shoot vertical orientation? Button side up looks ungainly and I can't get a steady shot that way. I'm a pretty new photographer though so that could very well be technique.

I shoot ambi with guns and cameras depending on what side of me the subject is on and whether I forgot my glasses (left eye doesn't need them.) I find that like guns I don't shoot cameras face-on to the subject but rather cocked to the left or right and the nose doesn't become much of an issue. Of course I'm not overly experienced yet and I don't have a long nose so YMMV.

Right eye open with left eye closed close, but realized I have a tendency to close my left eye too tightly, which makes me look like a moron, so I've been practicing loosening up or otherwise keep both eyes open.

Right eye only with my M2, but I sometimes open my left eye (usually unconsciously) to have a look at what's going on

Was a good bit of advice as my TLR seems to be just about perfect & the waist level finder is just so much less threatening than holding a camera up to the face.
I'm going to get a hat and practice my 'old fool with a camera' routine so that everyone thinks I'm a harmless old codger.😀

Shoot with both eyes open on the R-D1, as I can still see what's going on around me using left eye through the camera viewfinder for focus and right eye through the accessory (21) viewfinder...
(although not at the same time!)

I use to focus with the right eye, but switched to left as age takes it's toll, it's now the better eye.

Like J-P above, I shoot left-eyed but leave both eyes open. I'm right-handed. I press the camera against the point between my eyebrows and the tip of my nose, with my eye in the viewfinder vertically between them. I use both eyes for viewing peripherally around the camera.

I used to shoot SLR cameras right=eyed, but since I started using rangefinders I have gradually changed over to using my right eye. That way I am not hiding behind the camera so much. I usually keep both eyes open but shut the left when critically focussing

I usually shoot right eye, but if it is quicker, or more sneaky to shoot lefty, I do that sometimes as well.

Left eye dominate, right eye open but blocked by camera/right hand.
Of course this sticks the advance lever in your right eye but nothing is perfect.
