what?
It's sad
It's sad
I think it's sad, actually.
No one can fault Leica's mechanical / optical engineering. It is . . . what ? . . . the "gold standard" I think. Criticize them for this or that or whatever about their market presence or their pricing strategy or their business model or their product concepts . . . but their engineering record is incredible.
I am lamenting is all, being an engineer (retired) about why technical excellence doesn't win in the marketplace. Pricing I think, designing the wrong thing I think . . . but actually I don't know.

Now that I have read the announcement a few times, I'm not sure how this is not just an M9 with different colors.
Anyone else get it...?
Seriously. I think it's just an M9 without a frameline preview lever. I feel like I'm missing something.

on the upside. I'm guessing that Leica has a massive stockpile of the Kodak CCD sensors, thats good for M9 users.

Engineering sometimes is defined as putting science to the service of people with the most economical means. (BTW, I'm an engineer too..)
Leica has lost its legendary reliability/dependability record we were accustomed of with the classical M's.. Also tell me what did Leica engineering accomplished if the sensor is to come from Truesense/Cmosis, electronics completely from Jenoptik, shutter from Copal and the display, EVF from Far-East subcontractors? What's left for Leica's engineering other than the optical rangefinder that they still are not able to produce it to the original M3's standards? And the body was since 1953...
Look at the 2012 September introduced M.. even the hi-ISO capabilities are not to be compared to the APS-C sensors of some brands.. How many M or M-E users will dare to use their cameras under pouring rain?
Yes, Leica is a niche camera, also not for professionals.. However talking about "camera engineering" with Leica may not mean much further than talking automotive engineering with Morgan. And Morgan is an expensive car too however I wonder how many owners buy them for the "engineering" side of it.

Congratulations, Leica Digital. In accordance with your persevering in the endeavor to squeeze the maximum amount from a dwindling customer base, and in the face of intense pressure to utilize and implement the technological excellence you made your reputation on, instead sticking to your guns and telling your customers "f*** yourselves, we're Leica," we hereby award you with the prestigious and much-coveted Troll of the Year Award.
Please wait again until next year, when it will be available in a different color and befouled with a red dot.

Suddenly the camera, which I really maligned in the last few days -The Sony RX1- looks like a very sensible and worthwhile purchase than for example this absurdity called Leica ME.

How will non-coded lenses work with this, without the frame line selector? Apparently the brightlines are electronically displayed and there's no selector or brightline window.
Does it have a focal length mechanism detector built in as with previous Ms?

I misunderstand your trolling, why is this absurd?

Are you reverse trolling?
And if you don't know why this camera is absurd then please stick to photo forums beginner section.

would be nice if you didn't accuse people of trolling. anyways, it's been awhile since the Leica M9 came out. that's why he said it's absurd, considering it's not really an improvement yet it still costs a lot compared to the sony.
i'm hoping that the Leica-ME will further drop the prices of a used Leica M9. time will tell.

I still cannot work out what the M-E leaves out. Perhaps the optical reader of the lens flange is absent too? Apart from that and the preview lever, which I don't use, I can't see what else they could leave out. If it weren't so ugly I would seriously consider it.
